The transmission in my brothers 95 Yukon 4x4 gave up the ghost the other day.

Anyone have one for him that would fit this vehicle or know someone who could/would rebuild this for him fairly quickly? It's his daily driver.

Thanks!

Look on CL. I JUST bought one on there for my '96 Suburban. There is one out there with a fresh rebuild for $850 and a bunch of others too.

He saw those. If that seems to be the best route in your opinion, I'll tell him to jump on that.

He is looking at at least $1000 rebuild from a shop unless he knows someone. I would jump on that. I got one for $500, but it was used and I really didn't want to spend much more than that. $850 for a rebuilt is a good deal, plus you can always negotiate... :)

former employee of a local dealership would probably rebuild it for you. He's rebuilt quite a few for people i know already. PM me if interested and ill pass along the number

LT1 or LS1 style would it be? LT1? Or does it have to be from a truck?

Honestly, I have no clue about these transmissions.

He doesn't want to spend much over $500 on this repair given the mileage of the truck so I guess he can buy a junkyard special and take his chances there.

He asked for help and now decided to get cheap. He's my younger brother so all he got for smarts was leftovers... :goof

You should be able to get something for the $500 price point without much problem, but yes it will be a buyer beware deal...

If you don't know a lot about these transmissions, I would say your best chance of success is to find one out of the same year and application. Each transmission is calibrated differently to match the engine, vehicle weight, rear axle gear ratio, etc. Or at least that's how the 700R4s work and the 4L60E shares 90% of the parts in common...

I gave him the # I was given by SLOWC5 and told him to call it and stop being cheap.

Thanks all!

Would prolly spring for a new one. You dont wanna spend hrs doing job and it sheets da bed in 30 miles and have to redo it.

If one out of a 2000 Z28 would work I have one sitting here with just 36000 miles on it. Pulled it for a TH400. Would sell it for $250 if picked up. It had a B&M shift kit installed on it as well to firm up the shifting.

This thing would need the special 4wd tail housing with longer output shaft IIRC.

Thanks!
He heard, and as I think someone else mentioned, there are several different variations so instead of trying to completely half-ass it, I think he's going to have the one that's in the truck gone through so as to assure the right tranny is in the truck.

95 is a bastard year for those trucks. 96 brings OBDII and 94 lacks some of the electronics. I'd get it rebuilt.

I was wrong... it's a 97 apparently.

97 *should* be able to use anything newer with a bit of modification (removable bellhousings). 96 was an oddball year too with a change in solenoids. After 97 I think the only thing that changed is that they went to a removable bellhousing and other externally changeable stuff. The electronics stayed the same after 97 IIRC. Maybe sometime around then the converter and input spline count changed now that I think of it.

Anyway, you're not in bad shape as long as it's not a 95 (and some 96s).

He called the guy SLOWC5 referred him to and the guy knew within seconds exactly what blew. My brother is going to pull it and get it up to the guy ASAP and the rate seemed very reasonable.

Thanks again everyone.

Prolly a sunshell... Did it lose reverse, 2nd and OD? That is prolly the most common failure on these...

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.

Thats exactly what happened and exactly what he diagnosed it as.

Apparently it's like a $20 part but you have to tear into the trans to fix it. So while he's in there, he's going to give it a general refurb.

I guess he knows one of our friends too who is apparently back at Heiser wrenching. He took this Jessie fella's spot at Heiser when he left or something??? Some crap like that... I was only half paying attention.

Anywho... thanks again for the referral... :thumbsup
