i got pulled over cuz 'my brake lights weren't working' and then he told me that they look like led lights and those are illegial because they aren't as bright as stock lights. then he told me to hit the brake again, and it worked.
and i also got warning for a loud exhaust but nothing for my brake lights... probably because hes stupid and doesn't know that led lights are known to be brigher than any stock lights. expecially cuz they are 20 dollars for two bulbs....

I call BS on that we have DOT approved lights on our semi's and trailers that at night light up the whole road when you hit the brakes!And the state troopers never give us a fine:rolleyes:I think that cop was a lil bored..
Hell most companies switch over to all led lights all around!

In a car application it all depends on the LEDs. I'd never use crap that you can buy @ autozone for LEDs, been there done that. But you can buy some ridiculously bright ones on e-bay.

Hell, most of the new police light bars are LEDs. All of the lighting on our newer fire trucks (apart from the headlights of course and the two rear upper rotators) are LED. Are they going to pull my wife over in her SRX (cuz she goes through Falls quite a bit) because she has LED (stock) tails?

Well. - LED's are brighter, but only when used in a housing that has the ability to reflect the light coming from the LEDs. If you're using a bulb that had the LEDs facing out and back, they will not be as bright as incandescent bulb that is reflected from behind by the housing.

There are LED bulbs like Dan said, on ebay, that have LEDs shining back and to the sides; they work much better than anything else. Unless you're using superflux LEDs (the larger ones that you see on many new cars, which are VERY bright and do not need a reflector housing).

Falls cops suck like that... I had tint on my 6-banger for 4 years, they pulled me over and I had to have the windows re-tinted... Because it was 2% too dark... Of course they don't care if the windows have solar tint from the factory....

From what I've noticed they've gotten bored in the past few years and decided that if they feel something is a "equipment voilation" you're getting a ticket or a warning...

On my 6-banger car they said nothing about the exhaust, lowered ride height or anything like that...

I have all LED lighting on my truck but tails.( i will soon) The amber LED cab lights i can drive with at night w/o headlights on! And the amber LEDs down the side of my truck are bright enough to be considered underglows LOL

true that.. i etched a board for my rear 3rd brake light... and its 4x as bright as my stock bulbs..

The LED bulbs are not condusive for the reflective material in the brake light housing. Mainly because those snap in LED bulbs for like 1157 dont have any lights on the backside to project onto the chrome. So it only looks like 2 red dots in the brake lights. I rip on a guy i work with all the time because he has that same arragment in his durango and you cant tell for shit if hes on the brakes or not! The CHMSL is the only way to tell hes braking lol

i love playing with leds i'll put up some pics of my tails on the gsxr but first ryan and tom are correct leds only light up about 15% of the area around itself leds mostly shine straight ahead. the tail light cover on my gsxr alows the leds to disperse but you still see the little dots lol but there bright heres a few pics and a video i just took since leds are a hot topic today

state is 50% right....i'm in the falls everyday....they see my suv parked at work everyday....got pulled over the other day for burnt out tail lamp...no biggy....rolled down the window...didn't say a word...i'm at 30% on divers and pass door windows....they don't even have a gun to tell ya what your tint is at....

Velocity LED's is a very good seller. I have bought from him before.

You can also try www.Autolumination.com. He also sells sets for Gauge Cluster bulb replacements. They have a wider selection over SuperBrightLED's but are a little more expensive.

The Surface Mount Technology LED's are probably the Brightest LED's out there.

I would do orange-red Lumiled superfluxes. They put out more lumens compared to red.

I would also buy the real stuff from Lumileds, which is philips. Ive used leds from china companys and due to their poor quality control, the forward voltages can vary greatly between leds resulting in a slightly different color. Lumileds will sell you tubes from certain bins with the same forward voltage. Its the way to go.

aparently i didn't put a link in my other post lol but superbrightleds is what i recomend. or build them your self :goof. I have white leds in the back of the bike and they light just fine. i didn't put red ones because the red ones do not light as bright and there for would not be able to see as well
