My parents have a 1980s Craftsman II lawnmower from the 80s that has a 10-12HP (don't remember exactly) OHV motor that is dead. It has no compression at all. I don't know who made the motor originally as there isn't any badging, like most will have a Kohler, Briggs, etc. sticker on the engine somewhere. All it says is Craftsman 12HP OHV or something like that. I want to replace the motor and want to know if any vertical shaft motor will work or if there is a specific brand that must be used.

It looks exactly like this one

should be a standard bolt pattern motor, could use just about any 11-12 hp motor in it, that probably had a techemseh in it from the factory but can verify that if you get the model number off the machine.

I think older Techumseh usually have a Indian stamp on the block too. Not sure though. Get a Briggs.

OVXL120 tecumseh... Typically a briggs Model 280000 OHV will bolt right on, and the crank szie of the tecumseh will be the std 1" x 3-5/32" The xhaust will be the ***** ona new engine though and getting that to exit correctly.

If your looking for new... Places like northern tool has them locally. or this place too... http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/

Try to find one with the best possible exhaust exit location to fit the hood, the electrical connections for the alternator will be intresting too... also try to avoid an engine with an anti-after fire solenoid on the carb, u would need a new key switch and some wiring to make that work, or the engine wont run.

This one here will be closest match for this app... A M28 L-head. The wiring harnes may or may not plug right into this from the OVXL, this engine uses the basic dual circuit alternator for charging batts with DC and running the head lights with AC.

Or if you want a newer OHV engine, this engine here looks to be about the closest match i could find.

I've got a 17hp Wheelhorse tractor that runs and works great, I'd sell it to you for less than a new motor would cost......
