View Full Version : Urgent: Need shop with lift...

Got my new DS in and planned on heading to GLD today. Problem is that the DS vibrates now over 78MPH. Speed INC installed it but I'm not sure if it is an install problem or something with the shaft.

I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to a shop in the Racine area that could look at it real quick and either fix the issue or put my old one back in.

I just don't have a lift.

its not balanced and it should be....

it was balanced when made, unless one of the weights came off.

Eitherway I need a lift....

I have heard of more crap coming outta speed inc lately than in the past four years.
SPEED INC. for the loss!

Sorry this happened to you. I'd be on the phone raising hell. And I would report them to the BBB!

drop the DS and have it balanced...

Yeah, I am rich, not really. But I am also no mechanic.

I put it up on jack stands and looks like the rear weights on the shaft are hitting a heat shield.

It would be a hell of a lot easier to drop the exhaust and the shaft with a lift, I just don't have tools here because they are all packed up (i'm moving again in 2 months).

I just need some help to get the shaft out and back in.

So as you go faster, the weights hit? Is the DS bowing out?

windsor is closer right now, but I live up in milwaukee.

pm's coming your way.

Pic shows where I think it might be hitting. Speed INC put it in so I am not sure if that is from the install or from driving...

The drive shaft has, what looks like two washers tac welded to it. I can see where it is scraping on the weights. Maybe it was just balanced wrong.

I have YET to hear of anyone happy with a one piece DS for our cars, they are too long and vibrate to hell or have a low ass mph limit.

solid mounts instead of the rubber donuts would be a good fix.

this is a two piece. I think it is an install issue.

this is a two piece. I think it is an install issue.

I HATE when that happens. You get all excited about putting on the new mod and then it ends up worse than when you started.

I prefer to work on my own stuff. That way if I fvck it up, I can only be mad at myself. In your case I understand your tools are packed so you couldn't.

Next time that you want to do something to the car, why don't you ask someone on the boards. After you weed through all the bitching between each other of dumb Sheeeyat, the people here are a group of compitant individuals that are usually more than willing to lend a hand. Just an FYI for the future.

Hope it works out for you.

I once dropped a bolt for a cam cap down the front cover on a 4cylinder (with a chain).

how is that possible? all clutch disk's that ive EVER seen have "flywheel" written on one side. PLUS every clutch ive ever done, the PP (pressure Plate) wont even go on all the way if it is backwards.:goof:goof

nope.... just a yellow painted dot, like I was supposed to know what the hell that ment. Fully knowing when I installed it I was taking a 50/50 shot at getting it right.

I missed the fact that the splines stick out further on one side.

For the record, it had small yellow dots facing the flywheel side, no lettering. Otherwise both sides appeared equal...the only thing one could discern was that there was a slight off-set from one side to the other.

Many disc on older cars don't care which way you face them, being identical either side.

I was there helping...it was dumb of us to not to fully read the instructions...but there was nothing there erstwhile to indicate that anything was wrong as it was being assembled.

EDIT:TREED>>WITH PICS NO LESS!!! But you'll notice that it sits flush on the pressure plate either way.

Big thanks to Zak for helping me out with his lift. We took the shaft out, inspected, and put back in. Still the same result with the vibration.

Going to have it checked for balance.

Get this, Bird of Prey (company that made the DS), is saying it isn't straight....

:rolf

Yeah, no shit....said center carrier has to be more to the passenger side.

I told them we have it as far to the passenger side as possible without it hitting the tunnel.

Could probably throw the bracket into a bridgeport mill and turn the 5/16" carrier bearing mounting holes into 5/16" X 5/8" slots which would allow more adjustment, why has this set up worked for hundreds of others tho ?
Shaft is most likely out of balance IMO. (not much)

Not a lot of people have it, maybe 10-20.

I'm the only one with vibration issues.

Wow 10 or 20 ? No wonder the dang thing is so pricey.

Nice DS balancing shop, I would stop in there and talk to the guys, ask them about the malaligned shafts and about having it balanced, they are very helpful and nice.
Bring the GTO and park where they can see or hear it for serious good help and chatting.

sounds like you need somone with a dyno to watch whats going on with all the vehicle weight on the tires....... and running at the speed your having problems at..... 1-414-322-0280

I put it on jack stands, dropped the exhaust, undid the center carrier plate and drilled better holes.

Driveshaft is now as straight as possible without hitting the tunnel.

If the vibration is still there I'll give west bend dyno a call to see what is happening at speed.

Thanks.
