Adopted a dog from and friend-of-a-friend who couldn't keep him. They got him from a relative who found him on the side of the road in suburban Detroit so little is known (no microchip, no lost n' found, nothing). He looks to be pure or darn near pure German Shepherd and the vet figures him to be ~12 weeks old. If he's pure, this was a helluva score.

We named him Chopper.

He's getting along pretty well with our existing dogs. a few anxious moments the first morning but now things are going fine.

Thanks! I'd love to so Schutzhund training with him but that's a little extreme for a family dog. I think we'll just stick to basic obedience.

I think he's a keeper, Rick! My only fear was that he'd try to be Alpha Dog with our dogs and aside from a few exhibitions yesterday, which we immediately corrected, it seems like he'll fit into the family tree. Yesterday morning, he would not go on his back, couldn't reach under his belly and scratch him, or come up behind him without him growling at us, all signs of dominance. Within 24 hrs., we've broke him of all of that. Tonight he actually came up to me and flipped over so I could rub his belly.

Hopefully it was just mainly stress-related from being in 3 different households within one week and the consistency of a home with 2 adult dogs will help him out. He's very well behaved and way intelligent. Goes into his crate without so much as a peep, no accidents, and hasn't eaten any of our stuff yet. More than I can say for the first day with any other dog I've ever had, LOL. He was so good tonight, we contemplated leaving him to sleep in the bedroom on the floor but thought better of it because he still has the razors (aka puppy teeth) and he needs to learn the crate is his home/shelter.

Thanks, and I agree. It seems there's several color variations with Shepherds.

He might be mixed with something too... very slightly though. I found a bunch of pics of German Shepherd pups that look just like him.

I hope and pray he's not any part Akita (personal reasons) but I really don't think so given the tail among other things...

I just hope he catches up with them ears... :D

For some reason, I've seen plenty of shepard mixes with labs take a similar shape/appearance.

The thicker, ever so slightly shorter and rounded snout makes me think that. If there was a good standing picture, it might show less of the shepherd hip/back combo (narrow hip, long back) with a little more of the Lab hip/back combo (not as narrow nor long).

It's like the shepherd traits and genes are so strong/pure, they tend to resist changing when bred to a different dog. So things like the ears, and overall general shape tend to remain...roughly half the shepherd/lab mixes I knew were black. Some had a slight flop to the ears, another looked all shepherd except black with rounded snout...with most, it definitely looked more shepherd than lab though, lol.

just my .02

Whatever the case, it's a gorgeous dog that with firm but gentle, consistent training, and of course, a confident/firm handler/owner he should be a GREAT dog...

I really do think you're spot on. He's got the similar body build that our lab has and his tail is more lab then shepherd.

good lookin pup! german shepherds can be great family dogs. friendly, but at night they can be a good watch dog. My lab serves as an excellent watch dog. He keeps tabs on ANYONE entering or leaving the house 24/7. I'd like to see how big yours gets, those are some mighty paws on that fella.

also make sure to monitor his eyes. I know that German Shepards have a problem with there eyes. Some sort of desease that is herititery(sp) or whatever.

Wow interesting looking dog!

Looks like a mix between an (American) German Shepherd and something else... can't quite put my finger on what the other dog is, maybe a pointer or something?! Almost pit bull ish? As mentioned before, maybe a lab.

In any case congrats, they are a ton of fun, and any GSD or mix will be SMART!

This is my baby... love her to death. Great manners, smart, great with people/kids, great guard dog... the list just goes on and on, GSDs are absolutely phenomenal dogs! Here is my 5 year old (German) German Shepherd :

Took him by a family friend who does extensive agility and obedience training with all kinds of dogs.

Within 3 seconds of seeing him she says "That's not a German Shepherd... that is a Belgian Malinois and he looks like a pure one at that". Same concept, subtle differences but noticeable ones at the same time.

So I looked them up. Looks like she was right.... He looks almost exactly like these dogs.. certainly alot more than any GSD pics I've found.

Yea that likely could be true... The 2 breeds look *really* close, although I believe the Malinois only has the black and tan markings. Also most of the Malinois I have seen actually have a longer snout with smallish ears... Although I'm not really sure if that is characteristic of the breed or not. For example:
http://www.breederretriever.com/photopost/data/543/medium/belgian_malinois.jpg

In any case both breeds are great breeds, I'm sure he will be tons of fun... and it will be interesting to see what he looks like once he grows up and fills out. Like other said he has some pretty serious paws on him now :thumbsup

That's actually what the G/F stated when she saw a pic....but we both thought the snout was a little too short/round for it...and having never seen a puppy coat, the black on the chest/tail increases the uncertainty (although it looks like puppies certainly start of a WHOLE lot more black than their adult counterparts).

The pics you post above actually make the snout look a little thinner/longer than the original pic, so the trainer is could well be spot on :thumbsup

Either case...GS/lab or Belgian Malinois is going to be a strong/capable/trainable dog that should do wonderfully.

How's the pup doing this far into it? Any dominance issues still showing? Acting like a normal happy puppy in his new environment? House training?

He is doing exceptionally well. No accidents and his dominance hasn't shown itself at all since the first morning. I think that was stress related. He is a fast learner and very smart. He is going to start obedience in about 2 weeks and we may try agility when he is eligible (6 months)

Congrats on the pup! And i want to say you did the right thing with letting him sleep in the Kennel the first night. We did the same thing for our dogs for the first month or so. Now they are spoiled like crazy and HAVE to sleep in MY bed every damn night! But i dont mind because they are my babies!

And you are going to be suprised on just how smart your pup is, wait till he gets a little bigger its going to blow you away!

A little update....
Chopper has been through level 1 obedience and now is in beginner agility. He drives me crazy sometimes but that's a combination of still being a "puppy" and being freakishly intelligent. I have my sister training him because she's got lots of experience with it.

Anhwho... here's a few more recent pics of him...

our little guy has started obedience (he's pretty decent, we just want sharper responses that a professional trainer can get us) and then Meg will work him into agility as well.

LOL, yeah. That's our 6 year old Lab chasing him. I think she'd had enough of his crap that morning already. Luckily I had the camera close by and got a pic... :D

Scott - He's a very happy guy. This type of dog's purpose in life is to work and serve. He wants to be by us 24/7. If we are showering, he'll lay and rest against the door so we can't leave the bathroom without him knowing. He'll sleep with a paw on us so if we make a move for it, he knows. This is the most intense (far different from hyper) dog I've ever been around.

That is one hell of a rear breed,i had to search for a couple years to find one in Milwaukee. They are VERY loyal dogs.
Here's mine Trooper 1 1/2 years old and he doesn't leave my side when i'm home and is one hell of a guard dog.
