Just picked up some new rearend gears and am looking for a good shop in the milwaukee area to install them. Anyone know of a reputable shop that can do this for ~200-$250? Its a ford 5.0 with the 8.8 rear.

That's tricky. Most reputable shops charge $500ish. I know that would be around what Marv at C and M would charge, so if you are going to spend that kind of money go to him, he did mine and did an A+ job. There's a member here by the name of wesybenddyno/forrest that would do them to, but I don't know what he would charge. What kind of gears did you go with?

just take your car to marv at c&m and have him do the gears and the tune.

The gears are ford racing 3.73's. I think $500 is way steep. On my old 5.0 that I had in high school, I had gears installed for ~$230 and they worked perfect, no whine etc. Unfortunately that shop no longer exists. I was think of trying borchardts on 27th if anyone has any input?

Portponies ( Fritz ) does a great job with tranny's and rear ends. He is located in Port Washington.

PM him on here or go here for his email addy.

No one on here does their own gears?

I'm sure many people do, but this guy is looking for someone to do it for him. Not everyone is experienced with gears.

After the horror stories I read about the people who tried to do their own on the S197's, I was happy to pay to avoid the headaches they were having:rolf

yeah. we did some at work this week, and while they are not the worst thing to do, if for some reason they do not shim up right, it is a real pain in the ass.

That's what I heard, that it took forever to get the shims right so they don't whine.

Its not rocket science.... If you understand preload and backlash its a cakewalk.

$500 is assanine for a solid axle gear swap. Mabey for a IFS truck front end... Ive swapped the gears in every vehicle ive owned other then my last half ton and my current 3/4 ton. Solid axle swaps take 1.5hrs to do if you have all the right parts and tools on hand.

yup.

marv did mine and the only noise i have is the stupid clutch paks grinding when turning at low speeds, which is a ford problem. tsb out for it, just haven;t gotten it taken care of yet.

i do all my own gears and such(a lot of 8.8's!) and through my shop it would be roughly $400-$450...

Just called borchardt and was referred to Rob for an "in car" install. Called Rob and was told he would do it for $300.

400-500 is abosolutly ******* nuts for a job that takes no more then 4 hours for any shop to do. I had fast times do mine 6 years ago. Took 3.5 hours and paid about $250
