I've been looking at getting a bike. I tried to call my American family agent for a insurance quote and information, but I think they just gave me some random bs. I asked them for a quote on a 2005 ninja ZX-6R 636cc sport bike and she said $270/year. I figured this MUST be wrong.

I'm 23 (almost 24), 100% clean driving record, no motorcycle experience or license yet. How much do you think it would be to insure a bike like this? Also- about how much is the discount after a MSF course and the age 25+ discount?

One last thing... how does motorcycle insurance really work? I was told you insure it year round, but what if I just cancel my insurance in fall? And does insurance cover damages if you dump your bike?

TIA

I pay ~300 on my sv1000 with full coverage through progressive you pay for a year of insurance. And I have a previous speeding ticket @ this price

Yes it covers if you drop it. Drop it, smash it, get hit, it starts on fire......you name it, thats what insurance is for.

And that definitly sounds to cheap for a ZX-6r.....

Are you sure that's full coverage and not just liability?

I asked for full coverage, but who knows. I think they got confused because I didn't have a vin number.

That should be right. When I had my bike it was like $800 a year then once the bike became two years old blam droped down to the upper two hundreds for a year. You can get more accurate information if you give them a vin for the vehicle that you are looking at.

Whenever I tried american family they told me they don't like quoting sport bikes and anybody else would probably be more competitive than them for that reason. They said it's required you have 5 years driving experience and 3 years riding experience to even qualify. Even with all this, on their preferred rate they wanted $170 for me a month on a 2006 Honda CBR 600rr.

Where do you suggest going for coverage?

State Farm.

if you have a clean record, it's dirt cheap.

$18/month for my '04 Hayabusa :)

I had my cycle (Just bought Memorial Day Weekend) insured through American Family, paid $351/year with full coverage. I paid the extra $69.00 premium per year to add aftermarket sh!t to be replaced also, in case of an accident. As opposed to only getting a factory replacement of said chrome parts. Had an appraisal at Milwaukee Harley, took photos & emailed them over to my agent. 1 month later, an unfortunate accident happened which totalled the bike. Sadly, The bike was signed over to A.F. & I got a check for the appraisal value, + Sales tax less $250 deductible.

I tried to get a quote from american family again, but this time with a vin. Like said above, they won't even try to insure a "superbike". They said 3 years motercycle licence plus five years drivers and after that it would be $1900/year.

I think i'm going to try state farm and see what they say. Was your rates affected a lot by your age and amount of years of experence? I have no idea what to expect anymore... $2k/year or $500/year???

That's all my insurance was per month when I owned my Busa. Maybe the lady knew I'd never ride it and sell it within two months? hahahaha

A busa isn't considered a "superbike", more of a sport touring, so that has some affect. I had a horrible driving record from 18-22, but now that I was 27, it's all been wiped off the slate.

Age plays a big difference, but State Farm is much cheaper than most other companies from what I've seen. My whole family has been with them for years...and from talking to my friends I'm always way cheaper than them for everything, especially bikes.

I called state farm... $70/month for full coverage with $250 dect. Not too bad to have the thing covered if I dump it.
