Put on the rear fenders flares (ShineAuto Burnout) with some 3M 8115 panel bond. Good stuff. 90 mins of work time. Just goop on the inside anywhere there's contact and I did some extra around the outside edges since I'll be molding/blending this all in. You can run your finger over it to smooth it out. Wipes off your hands pretty easily.

Made some simple supports for the bottom of the skirts to give it a bit of rigity. Nothing too exciting

Other than a some sanding of some small items and a little bit of priming... that's it for today! I have to wait 24 hours for that panel bond to setup.

Where did you get the panel bond at? When it dries can you sand it to blend it or does it dry similar to caulk?

Looks good!!

looks good but we had problems with the panel bond and the bondo reacting togher and letting off some gasses causing small bubbles in the paint. if you call project two and ask for james he can let you know more about what he found out talking with the rep. we ran into that problem with the ESPN truck when we used that on the flares. otherwise it looks great.

I'll give him a call. It's my understanding that since the 3M 8115 is an epoxy based material you need to use a Urethane primer. I was going to use Lord Fuzor's 127EZ which is urethane based until I learned this fact.

The primer I am using is DuPont ChromaSurfacer 7704S 2K Urethane Primer-
Filler, which can also have a flex agent added.

Finishmaster's on HWY 100, just before the HOBO.

You blend it with your finger before it dries. Not sure if you want to sand it. Generally its not even exposed. I went goo-happy since I am blending over it.

Figured I would give my share in since this is the buisiness I am in. I work for Auto Paint and Supply(Racine store)

8115 = AMAZING STUFF! I sell so much of it. I have used it myself as well. Let me tell you that clock will never come apart again haha. Never heard the issue with the mud though. I will look into it. As for your primer the 7704 is what I use. Nice primer but it shrinks alot. I am looking into a PPG primer myself. What base and clear you plan on using in the end?

Looks good though so far. I really need to make some skirt supports like you did.

Taking suggestions, but I thought I had to stay in that family of products "Dupont ChromaSystem"

Mixing products I thought can cause reactions.

i'm pretty sure thats the panel bond we used, it might have been duramix. i think he bondo'd directly over the glue then primed and painted. it took a few days for the bubbles to push the paint. maybee priming between the panel bond and filler would help. james would know more, i am passing this info on second hand.

Not necessarily. I use DuPont primer filler and sealer depending on the job and use PPG DBC base coat and clear. I used the chroma system line all through school and really liked it. I have switched over to ppg though. Starting to like their products more. As long as your primer is activated(hardened) you won't have any issues throwing any brand base over it(as long as you don't use lacquer ) In fact with most bases you can put any clear over it you want. Just some food for thought. But that chroma base line is good.

A couple final color candidates:
I seem to like Micas and pearls. Not sure if I want to do any 3 stage painting because color matching down the road will be hell.

Toyota/Lexus Spectra Blue Mica (pictured: PPG paint: DBU code:5473)

I'm still hunting for colors... Wheels will be decided after I pick a color. I might be broke by that point. I thought about buying a crate LS3 or perhaps a built 403 LS2 (http://www.speedinc.com/enginepackages.cfm)

Put doors, hatch, hood, fenders, skirts, and front bumper on. Get all the gaps looking good. Spray down entire car in base coat, wet sand entire car, and clear. We pretty much only sprayed things that couldn't be reached once car is assembled.

Martin-Senour is re-branded Sherwin-Williams. It's also the premium line I went with. It laid out real nice, especially since we didn't have a booth and a controlled environment. I didn't see any orange peel yet. I got a hook-up on the paint too. Retail on the supplies I got was over $850.

My gun's cup is pressurized (to 15psi). There actually isn't that much overspray at all. It behaves much like a HVLP gun. It's a commercial grade piece of hardware. I think this gun cost over 500 bucks. IMO, it make my work look like a professional did it.

Believe me when I say I don't like pissing away money. I do my homework.

Seriously Andy, I am sickened and appalled by your behavior. I can't believe you are willing to kill our children by not painting a car in a controlled environment in a booth. Might as well dump pig and Homer turds in the local lake.

Oh I know what it is. Trust me. I know my paint. Shermin williams should stick to house paint. The martin is the cheap end of Shermin. Nason is a good cheap line that is pretty good quality. They make a nice clear too. the 497-00 is imo the best "cheap" clear out there.

And btw I don't care how much you paid for the gun. Facts are that standard guns go through MUCH more material than a gravity feed hvlp gun.

Not trying to rain on your party here man. Just letting you know. It is my job to know ;)

then you should also know that

Martin Senour Automotive Finishes Corp., Cleveland, has been certified under the QS-9000 quality standard, the common supplier quality standard for DaimlerChrylser Corp., Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp., and a number of truck manufacturers.

You're entitled to your opinion, but you should at least support it with something. Because I can't find nothing on the web that complains about any quality issues.

I would use it again, but if I had the money, I would use a higher quality paint, on a show car, NO.

My car is painted with Martin Senour NAPA paint and I get comments from guys in the biz all the time about the paint. The paint job is a little over 3 years old and is still outstanding.

I think the Roundy's brand tastes the same.

I stand behind all paint I make. And FYI that paint is Sherwin. So many nut swingers for Dupont, PPG and Sikkens. Also Car Quest bought Milwaukee Paint so does that mean that paint quality has gone down? Opinions are like ass holes. Everyone has one and a preferred brand to paint with.

Good answer haha. Fact of the matter it looks good. And I hope it all turns out well. If you ever need some more material I can hook you up very nicely. And get you the good stuff. Dupont Chromabase, PPG DBC. I mix all that in house here so I can get you some big discounts. You have done ALOT of hard and great work on that car. All I was trying to do was inform you. Nothing more. Not bashing at all.

If you need some really nice clear I will see what i have in my closet at home. As I have lots of dented cans and shit that we get credited for. DC3000 is an awesome clear. I don't need it. I got a gallon. I can hook you up if you would like it. And I can get you the hardener for it at 10 over my cost.

Car is looking great. And I can understand the amazing amount of work and time that is in it. I just want to see it continue to look this good.

haha. Then you didn't prep/spray it right. I have countless shops using it with great success. Half of the big dealerships I sell to use it. Have been for years.

I sprayed dupont in school. Never had a problem with it. It leaves about the same orange peel as a factory job does. But with the proper set up and technique it can look like glass. Just because you don't know how to spray it/prep it doesn't mean it is shit.

The op is using the cheap stuff. And by the looks he is doing it correctly. Cheap well prepared/sprayed paint is gunna be better than quality poorly spray/prepped paint. User error. Sorry.

Andy, if you're still going the ls1 route there's a few things I would do before you put the paint gun away - trim some of the underhood bracing(tb & shocktower areas), the lip on the firewall and the 2 lower brackets up front (that were for the radiator iirc)

Looks great, any decisions on wheels yet?

I'll take some pics tomorrow, or I could stop by later this week.

Removing the lower front brackets makes engine removal/installation a bit easier, the lip on the firewall reportedly has to go if you use the fast manifold(still have the ls6 here) and the hood bracing slightly rubbed my tb and r1 strut bar. My strut bar had to be raised ~1/8" or it would rub the intake manifold, using a thinner aftermarket bar may be an easier solution.

couple of bugs, but not bad at all. A slight breeze helped I think. Again this is just door jams, engine bay, and underside stuff, so you dont have to be too critical as you'll never see most of it.

Been kind of busy the last couple weeks, so the progress has been slow. I was training hard for some races which took alot of energy and time from the car. I was in Colorado 3 weeks ago for the Colorado Relay and Al's Run the week after that. Finally got back to it this past weekend.

The fenders and hood are on and aligned. Sanded off the "overspray" from the doing the door jams, sunroof area, trunk, etc. Quick hit of primer again and some sanding...

The next big headache is getting these fiberglass skirts on in a way that doesn't look glued or bolted on and more OEM and part of the car. The first issue we ran into is that the skirts come with a lip that sits in the door jam. This is just a recipe for the doors grinding between the bottom of the door and the top of the skirt. Paint would be scrapping off in no time.

We cut the entire lip off and we'll be blending it in to the door's edge with fiberglass/bondo

Lip gone here:
Please disregard the overspray :goof
http://www.brewcitymuscle.com/albums/rx7_rebuild/IMG_1680.sized.jpg
Panel bond was applied the the flat area that touches car body. We did some extra grinding to smooth out some areas
http://www.brewcitymuscle.com/albums/rx7_rebuild/IMG_1678.sized.jpg

We marked off where the skirt goes before applying the 3M panel bond (same stuff I used on the fender flares) to the backside of the skirt
