View Full Version : Collector Car for my mom....

My mom, age 57, has about $15k to spend and she is concidering buying a "classic car" for herself. I pooped my pants a bit when she told me j/k. :thumbsup The money is a small percent of an inheartance and savings for a water well that turned out un-needed.

She had a '67 mustang that was stolen and then replaced with a '69 mustang (crashed after a few years) way back when. She is thinking about getting a mustang, but also of something that may be a bit more pratical (newer-not restored), since she really knows nothing about cars and could easily get in over her head with a "restored car".

From my point of view, I think she would enjoy a '67 mustang more, but also get ripped off when it needs something fixed or updated. I can work on cars, but not something major (body work, trans, engine overhaul, ect). I also think a newer (unrestored) car, may increase in value faster then a mustang in her price range. Some other ideas would be a Lotus Esprit or Porsche 911.

What would you guys suggest? Maybe just a mid-late 90's Mustang?

God don't do either an esprit or older 911...if she knows nothing about cars, those aren't eh ones to put her in.

I'd suggest a late 60's, early 70's mid-size/large car.

Things like a Impala/Olds 98/Pontiac bonneville or Malibu/Skylark/Cutlass Supreme/et al
-or-
Ford Tornino/Merc Cyclone or Ford Galaxie
-or-
Dodge Coronet/Plymouth Satellite or Chrysler Newport/Fury/Polara...

At 15G, you've got some good options...

For that kind of money, you could consider finding a solid 3-, 3 (5 scale) car convertible. Or, going with the small cars (falcon/dart/etc) convertible as a 3+ car.

By avoiding the big names ( IE, chevelle, road runner, super bee, etc), you can get a pretty decent buy for even under 10. Then, take some money and update the chasis (good suspension components, sway bars, good tires, Good brakes) and as well, even modernize the engine a bit (electronic ignition if need be, new carb, heck, even fuel injection if you want).

it doesn't need to be a v8 either...all three manufactures have good 6 bangers...hell, before getting the coronet, I was considering even some of the 225 slant-six A body convertibles I was encounter...10G for good clean ones with 225's. Heck, and it's not like it's too hard to get okay performance even (albeit, on the order of a mild v8) with good mileage.

However, if she's not TOO picky, nothing wrong with a mid/late 90's (heck even into 2000's) mustang convertible either. Hell, she'd probably be happy with a 6, and I know someone selling one cheap.

Pretty much what Prince Valliant said.

it would be nice to have a "fancy" euro car but those are kind of a pita to work on and are $$$ for up keep.

05+ Convertible Stang, they come in many flavors and a nice one should be able to be had for that money.
Drive it where ever you want without a worry or wonder and around 8 million people know how to fix it and or make replacement parts for it=economical.

Good point. I was thinking the costs would about even out, but maybe not. It's a risk either way. An older car could end up being all bondo and rust away in two years or an newer exotic car could need some serious maintance/repairs. Hmmm...

She's not picky, but would really prefer an older mustang, because she had two. Automatic is fine, V6 is ok, ect.

The other option I was thinking about was a replica car. They are a bit more then she wants to spend, but most are nearly brand new. Something like a 57 speedster?? Shelby cobra replica would be awesome, but again, it's a bit more then she wants to spend. The main downside would be that it wouldn't increase in value.

But a 2000+ car just doesen't have the same feel. She just bought a brand new car 6 months ago, something that you don't see everyday would be way cooler.

Also- she would only put about 1000 to 2000 miles on a year.

Maybe a late 60s, early 70s Mustang Grande, Cool looking but not a fussy hi-po engine so should be good on gas. Grandes weren't beat to shite, neither. Show her how to do basic maintenance and she'll be good to go. Mercury Cougar of those same years would be cool.

Well I think the 05+ Mustangs have that nostalgic feel to them, with today's technology.....

I think the POWER convertible top will also add to the "fun car" factor, tho some folks do not like ragtops.
Make it a (horsepoop design sohc) V6 for a fuel miser and insurance saver.

I can say with certainty that if we didn't have to deal with the snow I would own one, and most likely a v6 too. Just a well built car to cruise around in, and it's even better in convertible form.....

x2 on the Stang, if not, maybe a nice clean early to mid 90's Camaro or Firebird, cheap to buy and easy to maintain. Plenty of those to get ahold of many of them weren't driven in salt/snow. Maybe even a late 80's to early nineties Corvette. Plenty of power, fuel injected and easy to resell. Not to mention the look factor!

Early to mid 80's 911 sc cars are pretty bulletproof with regular maintenance and nothing sounds cooler then an air cooled flat six motor bombing down a back road with the windows down.:headbang

Agreed... But finding a nice one that hasn't been hammered up and down the block for 15k or less is a chore... You'll be lucky if you can find one with maintinence records for that price imo...

Edit: Plus Parts/Labor if something breaks is going to be more expensive than a regular American Muscle car... And trust me... I know first hand from us restoring the 928 that parts are expensive :rolf Example: Automatic Gear Selector (Plastic Peice that shows what gear you're in) - $225 Of couse 911 parts are easier to come by, but that's just an example. My cousin paid some good ching to have a clutch put in his 944... Just remember, the crest gives the person working on it the right to charge more... :rolf :rolf

Volo Auto Museum just over the WI-IL border, 300 cars in a museum and they are all for sale :thumbsup.
Albeit overpriced :flipoff2: www.volocars.com
They have about 20 old Stangs and a few 67's.

$15k looks like a 385 series engine, auto trans and a CD player. :shades
