Wife says to me "I want a small lap dog". This is odd in that she never really took all that much intrest in our Australian Cattle Dog, although he is 70 lbs.

So I finally get it out of her that she is going through baby withdrawls now that our youngest is 3 years old. With 4 daughters and 2 stepsons I must say a giant "F THAT" to another kid....which for the record she says the same thing but I don't want her to change her mind.

Anyone know of someone who breeds/sells small dogs like Yorkies, Shih-Tzu, Maltese or any of the many hybrids of small dogs like Morkies, Shih-Poos, etc?

That or one of you get over here and get her pregnant so I can use the child support towards a bus payment.

I see no problem with a 95lb chesapeake as a lap dog. If she continues to complain/ go through baby withdrawel I suggest beating her.

Going all Ike Turner on her probably wouldn't be too good for business :thumbsup

Teach the kids how to play with matches and put gum in each other's hair. That'll keep her busy.

We have a Shiba Inu. I wanted an Australian Cattle Dog but they're too hyper for apartment life. Now that I've been stuck in an apartment for 10 months I'm glad I didn't get one. This dog isn't much less hyper but it's supposed to be in the 23-25lb range. Ours is 26. It was expensive though, $800 if you get it sterilized or $1600 if you don't. And you'll likely have to go on a waiting list.

Adam's parents have a shitzu-bischon and a shitzu-yorkshire mix. Both are very cute dogs with matching personalities. They picked up both from the same place, so I can ask her tomorrow what the name was.

Old English Bulldog. Stocky, but sort of lap dog sized. Females are probably 30lbs. Sweet personality and they don't need much exercise. Expensive, though. $1300+ for a decently bred pup...

Your Inu is lovely. I've never seen that breed of dog. Is it Japanese? I ask because Inu is the Japanese word for dog. Kinda like the anime, Inu Yasha.

Most maltese-mix dogs don't shed and tend to be very smart.

I highly recommend them, they are queit not under your feet and very smart. I can put you in touch with our breeder if you like.

Here's what I'd recommend if you wanted a small dog:

Pug's. But I call them "miniature mastiff's" since they DO resemble very small mastiffs.

GREAT small dog for kids. Why? Kids like to poke, pry, grab, roll, wrestle, hold...etc. All things that can hurt or frighten the "typical" small dog. This is the reason why toy dogs aren't generally recommended for families with small children.

Pugs, on the other hand, are hardy little beast. They don't injure or scare quite as easily, so they tend not to be as intimidated by the little beast that come running up to them, grabbing, crying, etc, aka "kids".

Other great options for small (under 20-30lbs) but hardy and known sweet kid friendly breeds, the boston terrier:

Another GREAT and under-recognized breed that fit the mold, FRENCH bulldog:

and fully grown:

French bulldogs are great dogs, called "clown dogs" for good reason. Good humor, GREAT personalities, and brave for their size. Highly recommended.

The great things about all the little dogs above, is they tend to exude confidence when raised properly...plus, the are TREMENDOUSLY devoted, if not obedient. They have a sweet nature, but aren't going to pass up a chance to wrestle.

IF you look into a boston terrier, look for a breeder who advertises "Boston BULLY terrier"; they're a little hardier, a little more stable, but have the same persona and markings to the "regular" boston terrier.

Thanks for the input folks. I love those pugs, kida look like they ran head first into a wall but funny. Never even thought of a french bulldog but they certainly would fit the bill.

The wife is thinking no more than 10lbs when mature. We are going up to Sheboygan here shortly to check a little guy out. We shall see.

find me an English Bulldog for $1300 with good lines and I'll buy two of them! My mother-in-law is a breeder and she gets $2100 a pup. :wooo

Pugs have awesome demeanors, but they do have leaky butts and drooly eyes. You can avoid this by going to a reputable breeder. I have two Jack Russels and they are a handful. They're not right for a young family. We also have a black lab, and they are the perfect family dog, but too big for what you're looking for. I think our next dog is going to be a pug though, they really are awesome dogs...

Damn...:wow
I had checked into the breed a few years back and that's about where they started. But these days with idiots paying $500 for what I consider a mongrel, (Golden Doodle? :rolf :punch:) I guess they would be a lot more. I need a better job...

lmao, thats what I pretty much said.

Well she looked at a pug, just not furry enough so we brought home a Morkie (maltese/yorkie hybrid). All 4lbs 6oz of fury of him.

And Jer, judging by your avatar I bet you could come up with the name my wife picked out.

Use a blade of grass for size reference;

very cute puppy...and unlike a kid, you can crate train them.

Yeah, it's funny that women tend to not be terribly big fans of pugs...I've know women who call them ugly, to which I reply "Well, the great thing about dogs is that they'll never judge your appearance."

Neat lookin little monster!!

We got a "purse dog" a few years ago to be a companion to our Lab. At first, I was a little leary since I'd only had larger breed dogs but he's actually pretty cool shit. He's a pit bull trapped in a 10lb. Shih-Poo body (shih-tzu mixed with toy poodle).

You can mix just about anything with a maltese and end up with a good dog.
