I was thinking of some upgrades for my bike, I have a Giant bike thats about 15 years old with no suspension. I was thinking of adding some shock forks to the front but dont know if it would even be possible, not to mention worth it. Anyone have any good websites for info? Thanks-Dan

I work at allis bike shop. Something that old is worth replacing, for what you will pay for a shock fork, you could get a brand new decent bike. Come into the shop and look around. You could get something really decent for 500ish.

for the money, you cant really beat a gary fisher. i have a fisher bitter. its a hucking bike, but it will still hold its own on the trails. i also have a yeti, but they are expensive. http://forums.mtbr.com/ is full of info, and meets and rides and everything you'll need to know. not sure how serious you are considering going. but if you want to throw down for a full suspension, and dont want to spend and arm and a leg, check out ibexbikes.com they are an internet company, you can get a full suspension, pretty hard core (at least 4" travel in the rear) with all xtr components for around 1800, which is cheaper than the xtr component group would cost to buy.

I gotta admit, I love Gary Fishers! I have had my Wahoo for about 9 years now and no problems at all. Just routine maintance and you are good to go. I had it in some lakes and some pretty good rounds of demo bikes with my friends and nothing fazes it!

for around 450 bucks you can get a great bike. if you go with fisher, for about 450 you can get one of their basic hard tails with disk brakes (mechanical disks, but still better than traditional).

i just bought my girl a trek 4500 disk for 480. i personal would prefer a fisher, but she liked the trek better aesthetically

I just got back into mtn biking earlier this year. Have ridden about 200 miles of trails so far in the John Muir and Emma Carlin trails by the Kettle Moraine state forest. The emma carlin connector trail has 4 of the longest, steepest hills I have ever ridden. I still have yet to make it up all 4 without walking. I bought a Trek 3900 and added a few things, metal pedals (wont break on rocks), climbing bars for hills, and 2 water bottle holders. No disc brakes, but has front suspension and an aluminum frame.

the alpha treks are nice, light beginer bikes. dont get me wrong, i love trek, but anymore, for the money you get more by going with other companies (even fisher which is part of trek). we do the levis mound trails, they are amazing. highly recommended. if you're in the milwaukee area, the alpha trail and crystal ridge trails are pretty good to learn on
