Who's got what and how is it? I'm looking at the epoxy kits that you "paint" on the floor. Are they any good? Any suggestions on what to get or tips on applying? They worth the $$?

Make sure to prep the concrete good before you apply it, it works pretty well.

we have a 2 part epoxy on the floor in our garage, it doesnt like it when you let a large ammount of solvents sit on it for a period of time (obviously) but it makes cleaning up oil spills and other type of spills a lot easier. its held up now for a little over a year and cant complain, i just dont know what it was we used, im sure most are pretty much the same.

I just bought some yesterday, I didn't get that kit with the sprinkles, I just got the epoxy paint itself. Instead of costing $64.00 for a one gallon, I got two containers for $42.00, then you choose the color and they tint it for you, I'm really looking forward to doing it.

I've used a couple of the different kits that they make. The one that worked the best was by far the kit that came with the acid "concrete etch" to open and clean the pores (for lack of a better word) of the concrete.

Definitely cleans up a garage or work space nicely.

I've used the basement kit that Menards and Home Depot sell, and quite frankly wasn't impressed, so I doubt I'd buy that for the garage. I had some lifting of the paint when my dehumidifier leaked and left water on the floor for a day. When I do the garage later this summer I'm going to order the kit from U Coat it.

I did my garage with the gray paint, holds up great. After doing a test spot, I decided to take the can back to lowes and have them add some black to it to make it a little darker. I've done everything in this garage, it's held up for almost 3 years, motor rebuild, 2 trans removals, jackstands sliding around in it, you name it. Pretty durable and easy to clean up.

Using jacks and other things on the ground was one thing I was kinda worried about. When you used them would it scratch it or anything?

Any brands suggested? Right now I am looking at the Epoxy Shield by Rustolium or the Quick-creet kit.

also they say that one kit covers 250sq. ft (1 car garage) how many kits did you guys use? I need enough for a 2 car kit but want to get input before getting 2 kits.

I put one gallon on my 1 car garage, in 3 coats. I waited a week before I put anything on it. My buddy did his garage too, but he put his car on it after 3 days. The paint peeled up where the car tires were. That stuff has to cure a few days between coats. I've slid everything over this floor from toolboxes to jacks and jackstands. Not to mention oil, trans fluid, brake fluid, radiator fluid, you name it, it's been on there and cleaned up easily and left no marks. It hasn't scrached, bubbled, nothing. Like Breecher said, make sure the floor is clean first. I got the can from Lowes, cant remember the brand. It was about $30.

I used the Rustoleum Epoxy shield on my garage 3 years ago. I did not put it down thick enough, nor wait long enough to put shit back in the garage. I would like to re-do it at some point, I wonder if the acid etch would be enough to clean off the old stuff or if I need to do something more.

You have to buy the Industrial Floor Coating not the Garage floor coating. It holds up much better. Another key is to do the clear coat over it too. My brother did that and it is holding up great to abuse.

I'd go with a solid oak floor.

I used the Behr 3 step system from Home Depot to do my parents' garage when they built their house in 2004. It's ok, but not great. None of it has peeled off, but the gravel from the driveway before they got black top in caused it to get pretty scratched up. Break cleaner will cause it to bubble too. I would really like to get the epoxy coating that is used in the service stairways of commercial/industrial buildings that has the rough non-slip textured finish. I'm not sure where to buy it, but that stuff looks pretty heavy duty.

My brother did this and it's great for spills. Not exactly sure what kit he used, all I know is it is speckled (?sp) and grey colored. I think it's awesome to have in garge, but oil on it blows...I've almost fell straight on my a$$ a few times now with the floor being slippery from just wiping up the oil

That's the stuff I'm talking about. Any idea how much that costs per square foot(I assume this how they determine cost)? I don't want to bother them since I'm considering this any time soon.

I put down the stuff from Menards Rustoleum(sp?). It hasn't held up as well I would have liked. I have a feeling that I didn't get the concrete clean enough. Although my dad did his garage when my folks built their house and it's just starting to peel in couple spots. That's been 6 years. He made sure to tell the contractor to not put a sealer on the garage floor.
Oh and I had to use two kits for my two car garage.

Hmm...looks like I got a little more research to do

the kits are usually a water base which sucks. You want a petroleum base epoxy for your best bet. The acid etching that someone talked about isnt as great as they claim it to be. For your best results you need to open the pours in the concrete and the bast way is with a sander from conversations that I have over heard.

I used the home depot stuff on mine and followed all of the directions to a T and it still hot peeled where the tires roll.

Spend the money and have pro's do it. At least if it peels, you will have a guarantee.

BTW, the acid to prep the concrete smells like puke.

where I use to work they did all the shop floors with an epoxy resin. The prep sucked ass....we had to be in same room while the were preping the concrete which consisted of a machine similar to a sand blaster which put TONS of fine dust all over  but as far as adhesion goes it stuck like gum in hair

that machine was either a diamond cutter or a shot blaster.

I did my parents' using the Behr kit with the acid etch and haven't had any problem with peeling, but it was on new concrete. My biggest grip is that it doesn't seem very durable against gravel stuck in tires or brake cleaner and it stains fairly easily. I've never heard anybody say anything good about the Rustoleum kit.
