Calling all BCM'ers for help..

My mother drove up here from Cleveland, OH today and she said she had been having trouble w/ her brakes over the last few weeks..

She went on to say that she doesn't drive the van much and it usually sits for days or even weeks at a time.. A few weeks ago she went to drive it and the rear brakes were locked up as it was parked in the garage.. She had to floor the van to get it to drive in reverse but then the brakes seemed ok.. She said it did this two or three times.. Today she got up here and mentioned her brakes.. I looked at the rotors and they are covered in rust.. Which means even though she drove over 7 hours to get up here they never grabbed as she applied the brakes..

The van is a 2004 Ford Freestar w/ something like 38k miles.. All the brakes are calipers and none are drum..

What would cause this? I'm a little concerned because tomorrow is Sunday and not much will be open and if they are they won't be open for long.. Then she has planned to leave Monday morning to get back to work..

What would cause a newer vehicle like that to have BOTH rear brakes fail.. The passenger side is 100% filled w/ rust.. The driver side has some slight markings like it grabbed during the trip but nothing like it 'should' look like..

Please, any suggestions would be helpful as we need to fix it for her long drive back..

And we plan on pulling the calipers off tomorrow but not really sure what caused the problem so not really sure how to fix it..

maybe bleed teh brakes, it might have air pockets that need to be pushed out.

I do not know why rear disks do this but they do after about 35-45k miles miles, major pitting, rust holes, sometimes grooves on the rotors. The pads will still have meat on them but they just aren't bitting into the rotors.
I fix it by buying all new rotors and pads and putting that on there, if the parking brake is built into the caliper you will want to use your caliper piston return tool to turn the piston back in, some rear disks have a little drum brake built into the rear disk.

Honestly I really like rear drum brakes better due to them usually lasting like 100-150k miles, sadly with an open wheel drum brakes look horrible. :(
