it should reed "we screwed you so ride" with a new Harley costing more than a new well equipped car it make more sense

Harleys are what they are. They cost a lot because they can get that price. Plus with even the overseas manufacturers making their own V-twins, the image is seen as cool. A Harley looks like a motorcycle, not like the GoldWings which basically are two wheeled cars (and sometimes three)

When I looked into sportsters and other similar bikes, they cost less than the competition.
