View Full Version : How many of you wear your seatbelt?

OxmanWI

How many of you wear your seatbelt and how many of you don't?

For the people who don't...Are you old fashioned, lazy or just don't like the feel of a seatbelt? Do you feel that it will cause internal damage if you have it on during an accident? Please vote on the poll and give me your reasoning why.

I have a friend who does not wear his seatbelt and I refuse to drive with him because of it and now he is offended. Not because I'm upset that he is risking his own safety but because he is also risking mine during a crash. If he would have hit someone, vice versa or rolled the car in an accident his body is now a free moving projectile inside the cab. His body can smash into me...killing me or seriously injuring me. For that I choose not to ride with him. Em I crazy or a bad friend for caring? I don't understand for the life of me why anyone would be offended because I would want them to be safe. Give me some feedback...

Thanks,

Josh

Always here too. I didn't used to and changed about 10 years ago, now after watching 2000+ crashes at work I would never go without again. I don't ride a bike w/o a helmet either but that's another subject.

Sometimes. Usually only if conditions are bad, or I'm planning on doing something risky.

I don't have a great reason why I don't. A little bit of it is has to do with me being alive because I didn't wear a seatbelt when I was younger. We got rearended into a truck with some pipes sticking out the back and I ended up going under the pipe instead of the seatbelt holding me in place to get the pipe into me. Sure it was just dumb luck.

Part of me does it probably as a my own small protest against it being a law. If I gotta wear one, the bikers should be forced to wear helmets.

It's probably a smart thing to do though.

its personal choice just like anything else in life
and why would you try to force someone in to it?
its there life and their choices.

since you have a God Bless the service men and women serving to keep us free

free means your free choices not your friends family co workers etc. making it for you.

as you are making a free choice not to ride with him.

if hes offended on it oh well life goes on life is to short to worry about things..

Always wear it...but I don't think I can force others to wear it in other vehicles.
In my car, when I'm driving however, I can and do....if we get in an accident, I don't want your body flying around and killing me.

I don't force others to though.

He has the "freedom" to do what ever he wants. I never forced him to put his seatbelt on...I just didn't get in the car...That was my "free" choice. It's his life, he has the choice to wear a belt or not, I never forced anyone to do anything.

My friends, family, co workers making choices for me? The man (my friend) is a grown man, if he does not want to wear a seatbelt that is his option not to. I never stated that in my opening post.

I'm not worried about any thing, this isn't going to ruin our friendship. I started this thread for a forum opinion that is all.

To be honest I like driving without my seatbelt, but I rarely leave my driveway or any parking lot without first putting it on. In the Mustang I put my seatbelt on before I even start it.

Yeah I pitch a helluva fit if somebody tries to ride in my car without a seatbelt. I am NOT gonna get sued for being an "irresponsible driver" or some shit.

When I was with my ex I wore it all the time because she refused to drive with me if I didn't wear mine. If I get in someone elses car I almost always reach for my seatbelt.

I always wear my seatbelt... I feel naked without it. Now, being a firefighter and having responded to thousands of car crashes... I've seen first hand what happens to people when they crash and aren't wearing them. I wouldn't go so far as to say "I've never unbuckled a dead person" because I have... but those crashes are so violent with so many G's involved that the victim's aorta is severed on impact so it really didn't matter if they were wearing a seatbelt or not. These cases are so few and far in between though that they are hardly worth mentioning (apart from being a good example of why to not drive your car into any solid object at triple digit speeds).

On the other hand, people that don't wear their seatbelts... I've treated plenty of people who've been ejected, smashed up their faces, etc... been seriously injured from crashes where they may have just gotten a rash from the airbag impact had they been wearing their seatbelt.

You can call it a personal choice if you want... but also understand that people that refuse to wear their seat belts are responsible for helping drive up healthcare costs. They are more likely to be injured (where a belted individual may not have been injured), and they are more likely to receive much more serious injuries than someone who was belted.

I think these are the facts and they are no secret. When I hear of someone killed or seriously injured in a crash, and then I find out they weren't wearing their seat belt..... I don't think "Oh what a shame." I think.. "No surprise there." They knew the risk and took a gamble anyway.

I'm all for freedom of choice, if you want to take personal risks that is up to you. I wear my seat belt all the time and feel naked without it (when I ride in cars without seat belts or broken belts, I'll keep grabbing for it 2-3 times instinctively).

Overall I would have to say the people I've rode with who don't wear their seat belts, tended to be the more reckless/lawless people I've met.. FWIW.

I sometimes do but not all the time. My friend's cousin got into a car accident and the car started on fire and couldn't get the seat belt unlocked and burned to death. So that is part of the reason I don't wear mine all the time.

ND4SPD
05-03-2008, 04:11 PM
 You know how many times I've heard how someone knows someone who knows someone that burned to death in a car wreck (or drowned) and couldn't get out because they couldn't get their seatbelt off... and that's why they don't wear their seatbelt? This is one of the oldest lamest excuses in the book. The odds of this happening to someone are so remote, it makes winning the lottery look like great odds. What makes you think that (by not wearing your seatbelt) you will be in any shape to attempt to escape from a vehicle severely damaged enough to catch fire if you get thrown into the dash/windshield/steering wheel, etc and knocked out, get your arms/legs broken, etc... Your chances probably aren't too good are they? If you are indeed concerned about either of those scenarios (and I know there are plenty of BS e-mail forwards that go around stirring up fear about not being able to escape your seatbelt)... buy yourself (and your friend) one of these and keep it either in your car (within easy reach) or on your keyring (and wear your seatbelt). Hell, who knows... you might be able to save someone else with one of these doodads.

but also understand that people that refuse to wear their seat belts are responsible for helping drive up healthcare costs. I'd say the people responsible for causing the crashes are to blame for that. Blame the cause, not the effect.

For a high profile case of my point...the Nick Hogan crash. Should the Hogan family not get sued because it's all the passenger's fault?

Sure, it's fully possible he "might" have walked away from that crash had he been buckled up...but I'm willing to bet he'd be doing even better today had the driver not slid the car into a tree to begin with.

Who is truly to blame for him spending the rest of his life on support systems?

Yeah, I find it hard to argue that point... helmets are the same way. I certainly don't think it should be a primary offense law. That's a bunch of garbage. Turning police officers into traffic cops. Just something for people to think about though.

i make sure i wear my seat belt. i had a friend who always wore his belt. i know he wore his belt to the day he died. the police report said different but the autopsy said he had bruising and cuts that show he had his belt on..

regardless this is my friend jesse he died earlier this year. he always wore his belt... always he was the one who really got me to start wearing mine more often. befor his crash. its ******* tragic to be honest with you and im still extremely bitter about it. he was one of those guys who would literally drop what he is doing to come help you or support you in some way. if i got in his car he would say " put your dam seat belt on" and if he was in the car next to you we would motion to put you belt on. sense his passing ive worn my seat belt every sec ive been in my car and that wont change.

here is exactly what happened. to him. there is not a day that goes by where i dont think about him. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=705490

Okay lets go another step deeper. I'm sure this friend was "Ohh my God Nick, please stop the car, you're freaking me out!" Bullshit...

Dudes were in a SUPRA. We all know damn well what intentions there were for everyone, including the passengers. You'd think this guy would buckle up, thats on him. Getting into the accident was Nicks fault.

Do bars get sued because of someone got drunk there and got arrested for DUI after leaving the bar? That would be news to me.

I had a accident in 1995 t-boned, i was in a 1995 monte carlo, got hit in the passenger door by a 1994 caprice doing 60mph,after the impact the car i was in slid off road into a field and hit a tree head on,without my seat belt i would have been dead, busted left knee,8 broken ribs on the left side also a left punctured lung and about 11 billionty cuts. Odd thing is I never wore a seat belt before that,I picked up a customers new Monte that morning for service and because 8lb 6 oz. baby Jesus was looking out for me I put it on. I hate how modern seatbelts don't have a detent on them to keep them off your body.

I always wear mine. It's more of a control thing. The seatbelt keeps you in place so you can concentrate keeping control of your vehicle. It's difficult to do that if you're sliding around in the car.

I used to horse around a lot, that's probably the main reason.

I also offroad. Screwing around at 5mph on 24" boulders will bounce you around a lot. Going 5mph through some tall grass and running into a stump will launch you out of your seat.

Offroading also taught me to never put my thumbs, hands, or arms inside of the steering wheel. Seen a couple thumbs broken.

I said no, but I have been wearing it more often now then ever. The gf has me wearing it everytime shes in my truck or me in her truck. I always figured they didn't need them in the 50's, why do they need them now.

Then again, cars were built a little tougher in the 50's.

I always wear my helmet, so I SHOULD always were my safety belt.

It's such a habit, it is automatic that I wear it all the time, everytime. Also, I do not move the car until everyone is belted in.

Don't want to wear it? Get out of my car.

formul8
05-06-2008, 11:36 AM
Then again, cars were built a little tougher in the 50's.

No way.

Cars in the 50's had lots of things on the dashboard that would impale you. The body panels were basically bolted to a flimsy frame. The body on frame meant separation in a sever crash. The entire car was one big crumple zone.

Even if they had seatbelts, the cars folded up and the anchor points were weak enough that you would have been dead or seriously injured anyways.
