My Son-in-law has a job at an automotive shop as general shop monkey. He needs to assemble some basic tools. They let him use tools in the shop, but he should get his own. The word has come down that he needs his own impact wrench. He is offered a Matco one, still in the box. What are good prices or brands he should look at?

Ingersol Rand. Sears sells there Titaniaum Line. There IR TI 1/2" is a damn good gun for the price. Ive had one for a few years.

There air guns are made by IR.

Different name, hiked up prices.

That 1/2" that is $397 is Identical to the IR TI 1/2" that sells for $250 or less.

just don;t let him get an IR "thunder gun". a tech of mine has one and it is a few more tire rotations away from getting destroyed or mysteriously misplaced, LOL! that thing is annoying.

I'll second the IR line, sold by Matco as noted.

I remove semi wheels with my little IR231 half inch gun at least
one time a week, same gun for 3 or 4 year without a rebuild.
My backup is a steel body IR231...never use it cuz they last
so long. Same gun I keep in my garage at home.

Just say no to Chicago Pnuematic (CP) unless its the larger 3/4"
line, pretty decent product on the heavy duty line.

IR Titanium FTW! They've got a ton of torque, fairly light weight and seem to last for a while, as long as they get oiled. I've wrecked two or three by not oiling them, but oh well, they were company tools and I just get a new one!

IR Ti > *** I've got two of the same ones. I got one at home and one at work. The one at home was starting to get kinda shitty on me so I bought the overhaul kit and redid it, now it's good as new. I'll never buy a different one.

It is loud as hell. loudest impact i have ever heard, and I am not exagerating at all. the thing does have some power, but WAAAAY to loud. the kid thinks it is cool  he came from a large truck shop where maybe they did not care, but at a dealership setting, it is too loud.

+2 for WAAAAAAAAAAAAY TOOOOOOOOOOO LOUD! Also if you ever use it, it's about twice the weight (at least) of a IR TI.

I have one and for what it is I think it works awesome, but I also wear hearing protection so I don't care how loud it is. As far as the weight goes it never even crossed my mind let alone bothered me......

Thanks, I guess he's going with the one he was offered for $300, I told him try to talk him down a bit. At least he knows to "ask the forum" when buying tools.

anything around 300 should be fair for the IR 3125? LOL its a great gun, but it tends to snap heads if not carefull. do not tighten anytihng with this gun. the matco one is the same thing and maybe better warranty.

our snap on guy sells them at the same price as northern tool. 280 bucks is what he sells them for. i think he gets them from there as well.

I have used a IR titanium quiet drive 1/2" for at least 4-5 years now with excellent service life and quality; and quiet as hell for an impact gun. I have NEVER oiled it, and haven't had any problems.

Good design, great torque, and no problems -- IR 2131QT FTW! <$200.00. Sears, otherwise there are CHEAP ones online.
