When Chevrolet officially announced the new Corvette ZR1 just before the Detroit Auto Show this year, it hadn't yet finished the certification of its new power-plant, the supercharged LS9. At that time, all the engineers would tell us was that the supercharged 6.2L V8 would produce a minimum of 100hp/L or 620 hp. Three months have passed since we got our first official look at the LS9 and the numbers are now in. According to GM, the LS9 has now been SAE Certified at 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of twist. The official EPA fuel economy testing hasn't been finished and for people who buy a ZR1 it probably won't matter anyway. Nonetheless, GM expects the LS9 to be the most fuel efficient 600+hp engine in the world, a dubious distinction if ever there was one. A special team of technicians will be hand-building and testing the LS9 at GM's Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich. Check out the articles below for all the details on the ZR1 and LS9.

Well, I'm sure some GT500 went for $60,000+.. The new GT500 KR will probably shoot right past that number.. Now the ZR1 is estimated to go for, what, $100,000? I think the bang for the buck would be an 07 GT500 for STICKER.. But, we all know thats not happening..

Soooooooooooo.........

Too bad half of the ZR1 production will be stashed in garages on jackstands so they can lose over half of the $150K they will spend to buy thinking they will be millionaires in 15-20 years.

Still, one must wonder when sub-$100K, 1,000HP cars will be the norm?

Buy a Z06 for not far off invoice, slap on a Magnacharger for $6K with the painted hood and you have a bargain ZR1 for about $20K less.

Yeah, thats an idea.. Or if your poor people you can buy a 99 Cobra and toss on a Procharger.. Then your about $80k less..

Buutttt, your also at 20% of the HP.. Well my idea isn't the best but dam it poor people need something to drive too!

Who really cares what you could make faster than a ZR1 with a lot less money, the fact is the car comes from the factory with almost 640 HP and its fuggin sexy.

A 99 Cobra and a 2008 Z06 are not even in the same universe, no matter what you slap on top of the motor. ;)

I know its been said but.....

2008 C6 $45K
Built engine, supercharger or twin turbo setup, driveline mods. $15-30K

Total - $75K or less.

That leaves you with a NASTY as hell car and 25K in the bank to replace stuff if it breaks because you no longer have a warranty...

Is a 630hp STOCK, Warrantied car cool... Hell yeah. Is it worth it, not in my eyes. I can do alot more with 100K.

I disagree.. Both come w/ four tires, a stearing wheel, glass and pistons.. Same universe? Yes..

But, I get your point.. I'm poor.. You need not say any more..

It's not that I am saying you are poor, the Z06 and the Mustang are worlds apart in construction, layout, design, etc. Your '99 Cobra is using a floor pan designed in 1978 for the Fairmont.

I can't afford a new Z06 either. :(

Your 75k dollar C6 will look like 95% of all the other Corvettes on the road and will sell for 50k down the road, Which will leave you 25k in the hole.

On the other hand you can have an EXTREMELY low production ZR1 who everyone will know as soon as the car comes around a corner. It depends on what you value more? Power for the buck, or Rarity/Low production/Amazing platform

Thinking like you, buy a CRX and 30k and you have a 8second FWD car. That way you still have 70k left over? I understand what your saying, but i also look at it a little differently

I heard that EVS in Random Lake had one. Not sure if it was true or not. One of the guys that works for me also owns a restaurant and he said that a lady that works at EVS comes into the restaurant a lot and she told him it was there. It would be cool to get a look at it in person.

Obviously you dont know me AT ALL. I could care less about one off and rare cars. I care about bang for the buck and the best product for the price. The ZR1 is for collectors, plain and simple. I could see no other purpose for owning one.

Collectors and well heeled track warriors. These cars are either going to be museum quality or hard core track worn in 20-30 years from now.

Low mile 90-95 ZR1's are CHEAP. Funny since many sold for $100K ($150K in today's dollars) and can be had for mid to upper $20's now. I think the new ZR1 has alot more substance to warrant the money than the last one, so this car has some potential.

damm and to think the GTR is limited to 112mph unless the gps detects a nissan approved racetrack...even with its speed limiter hacked it will only top out at 193mph. If I had the cash to burn I would take a new ZR1 all day long!

EVS did have one... an original low mileage 427 Stingray was traded in on the car. The 427 got added to Eric's collection which also includes an all original extremely low mileage 53 convertible. I head about the trade in straight from Eric's mouth when he said hello to my boss during lunch at Quiznos over break.

Same goes for getting drunk...
you can go and buy some expensive French wine which tastes really good or get some cheap vodka and mix it with jello. There is a little more work with the second, but you will still get a little tipsy.

$1,200 and it's Hacked. HKS has a software thing that removes it. ;) I heard they tested the ZR-1 at 202MPH. pretty nice.

The 90-95 ZR-1 was a DOHC 32-valve engine!! LOL

To the guys talking about how you could build a race engine in a cheap car and have it somehow be "equal" to the ZR-1 for less money, you must be dreaming... 99% of modified cars aren't even CLOSE to factory quality, most are hacked up heaps that sacrificed every factory function that got in their way!! To hot rodders it doesnt make that big a difference... but to the rest of the public it makes ALL the difference between a real car, and a race car.

This is a car built to last 100K miles!! I'd love to see someone with a modified car and aftermarket built engine making 600+HP that lasted over 100K miles..
