OK, here I go again. I had my mind set, but now I found this Onkyo kit which seems to blow the Yamaha away. Here's the 2 sets:

http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=HT-SR800&class=Systems&p=i

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8504692&type=product&id=1186004964722

I can get the Onkyo for $420 with free shipping off Amazon, or the Yamaha is $499 from Best Buy, I do have 12% off, so that brings it down to about $440.

The Yamaha is 5.1, the Onkyo is 7.1

Is this a no-brainer here? I'm pretty much set on the Onkyo this time. Thanks-Dan

Home theater, ok its more than just a couple over priced speakers, what do you have here? TV?, Audio? Seating? Lighting? DVD player? ect...Do it right

42" Panasonic plasma, Panasonic upconvert DVD, Dish HD, high-def TV viewing.

I dont need top end stuff, just something nice to make movies sound better than the TV speakers.

Sounds pretty good , Personally prefer the LCD's but if you got a good deal on a plasma why not. I have always stuck with Sony but thats just me. Theater seating Rocks, I have 4 reclining with cup holders...Makes the movie that much better

The plasma blew the LCD away when I compared them side by side looking at the same size, both 1080p, same $$$.

Depends what light you look at them in, the LCD Is way brighter but its all what your doing with it or where your looking at it. At the store if they want to sell more plasma's they will adjust the store accordingly and vise versa

Bose 3-2-1 !!!

Biggest pile of shit you can buy!!!

Good marketing is why people buy that. They are some of the worst speakers you can get.

Werd!

There are 3-2-1 box systems made by other manufacturers that cost 1/4 and sound better......if you like 2.1 wannabe "surround sound".

Here's the Onkyo you want:
Onkyo TX-SR605 (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?class=Receiver&m=TX-SR605&p=i)

It's HDMI hook-ups are the latest version 1.3 and it's probably the best buy out there with that new technology. I bought mine from CircuitCity.com. It was on sale for $429 and then I found an online coupon for another 10%. Shipping was free and with the tax I ended up paying $408. With the added benefit of 12 months free financing. :thumbsup

The TX-SR605 is state-of-the-art technology for under $500. What more could you ask for?:shades

Yeah, I thought thats what you had. I'm gonna go with the Onkyo box setup I linked above, though the way my living room is, I dont think I can even use the 7.1, it'll have to be 5.1 with 2 turned off.

Too much money. I'm not willing to spend more than $500 for all of it.

I most definitely mean no offense to you but... to an audiophile, anything Bose sounds like asshole.

That being said, if it works for you and you're happy with it, good!

I have a Onkyo HT780 (no HDMI). Other than it dying a month after I bought it and taking 6 weeks of different "service centers" trying to fix it, I like it. They fixed (or replaced) it for free except shipping.

Don't buy a 5.1 system. They're worthless. While not a lot of movies provide 7.1 a good receiver can split up the rear channels. Hellboy sounds wonderful on my 7.2 system.

Everything except the subwoofer and wiring is sufficient for an average size living room. Buy 14 gauge stranded wire for the speakers. It's around $10/50'. Otherwise you're going to think it's the speakers that suck.

The subwoofer is the same one they've been using forever, 10" 150wrms. Sometimes they point it at the floor, sometimes not. While great for a PC, it lacks the low-end response you want and doesn't move enough air to make you think that you're "walking with dinosaurs" when watching Jurassic Park.

I have a pair of JBL Cinemavision 12" 400wrms subwoofers that I use. They move some air and are pretty crisp. The amplifier will get toasty if you abuse them a lot but mine handle Tool and Staind pretty well.

At 1/2 volume the Onkyo speakers start reaching their limit. At 3/4 volume you're past the threshold of pain and you can hear distortion.

I have under $1,000 tied up in my home-theater-in-a-box, the two subwoofers, and the wiring.

While I wish I'd bought a H/K, I don't regret buying my Onkyo. I'd seriously consider buying a refurb from clubonkyo.com. You come out a ways ahead.

We have that at work, and while it does look pretty and sound good... no decoding for TrueHD FTL. :(
