Where do the extra 2 speakers go on a 7.1 system? I found an Onkyo 7.1 kit for less money than the Yamaha 5.1 I was looking at.

I'm pretty sure one is the rear center? Not sure about the other.
7 channels of sound....left, right, center, left surround, right surround, left rear, right rear

Soooo, what the difference between left surround and left rear? I thought the surround was the rear?

Not with 7.1
5.1 has to sort of simulate both side and rear sounds through the surround speakers...where as 7.1 doesn't. Surrounds in a 5.1 set-up can be more or less labeled as 'side' speakers.

Blu-ray puts out 7.1. I expect to see more and more titles with 7.1 as it becomes more popular.
There are movies with 7.1....they are just limited right now.

Some 7.1 receivers let you take the left surround and right surround channels and bi-amp your front towers (if applicable).
I don't have a physical way of integrating the left and right surround into my theatre setup, so I've got my towers bi-amped and it's oh-so lovely.

I have my room set up for 7.1, it is insane watching movies. You are engulfed in sound. I could never go back to 5.1 . In my opinion, I would go 7.1 more and more movies are going to be recorded in 7.1 for realism. Soon I hope to be 7.2 when I get another Earthquake MKV 1212.
But ryan is right, you can bi-amp the fronts if you don't have side dipole speakers.
