Dunno what happened here, its an XP machine, been working for 3 years. All of a sudden my DVD drive doesnt show up, doesnt work, but when I go into the Device Manager it shows me the model name of it, and here it says:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Whats the deal here?

Disable and re enable it. Make sure you have the current driver for it. See if that works

I uninstalled it, then restarted it. Now it says

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

This seems to have fixed it.

Shut down system, take cover off and unhook the cables to the drive. Start system and then shut it down. Put cables back on and start system. See if that helps the problem.

I had the same problem like a year ago. Tried everything, couldn't get it to recognize my drive. So I went and bought an external DVD burner and when I installed that, it somehow found my old drive and got it working again. Now they both work. I chalked it up to it being an added Microsoft feature.

Common problem and yes that is a proper fix... nothing "temporary" about it (or at least no more temporary than any other windows fix). :)
