View Full Version : Who wants to help me wire my fans?

Hey gang, having trouble figuring out how to wire my fans. I'm an electrical idiot. :(

Hoping to get them wired up so I can start driving the car longer distances (work, BWW, etc) as right now the fans are mounted but not functioning.

Here's where it's at right now (ask for clarification if need be):

I'm told that I need a relay, but I don't even know what a relay is/does, lol.

Anyhow, I'd be more than happy to give you some money for gas/food if you helped me get this patched up. I'm in Mequon and don't really want to take it to a shop and pay them $100/hour to sit there and scratch their heads.

Tomorrow morning/afternoon/early evening would be EXCELLENT. You can call me if you want to set something up: (810) 338-0287

Thanks,

Patrick

Yeah, um..... Use a relay.

A relay is closed by a 12v source, this allows power to be delivered to your fans.

Think of it as "cheap protection"

Found this diagram online, it's making a bit of sense.

In that case though I think the fans are currently wired wrong (or at least "slightly" wrong).

I have a diagram from my car. It uses a Vato Zone automatic fan controller and I have a toggle switch so I can turn it on constant, off, or go through the fan thermostat.

Thanks man, I kind of understand that.

What's the "switched 12V"? Is that the fusebox? If so, what is the controller doing?

A switched 12V source is any thing that: either switches on when the ignition is on or something like, Foglamps, headlamps, interior lights.

I have my electric fan wired so I can use my foglight switch to turn it on and off. (I don't have fogs anymore)

The relay is just a automatic switch, the switched 12v just tells it when to turn on and off.

You should prob have an in-line fuse too.

The fan controller turns the fan on at a certain engine temp and off again at a certain temp. I have it set to turn on when it gets above 180*, and when it drops below that the fan turns off.

I've got a wire that the guy I bought the car from gave me, it's got an inline fuse in it.

I'm slowly starting to understand this stuff. I suppose the controller is a pretty good idea, but I might go without it for now and just do a regular toggle switch.

You get that thing fixed?

No. :(

I talked to Fritz today and he might end up doing it for me, but not tonight. I'm tempted to drive it to BWW tonight anyhow because I was cruising around in it all day today and it stayed pretty cool.

As long as your not sitting in stop and go traffic it will be fine. At 25mph the wind will be pushing more air then the fans ever could. Bw3s on hwy?

Yeah that's the one, I usually go down there for the meet n greets.

edit: I suppose I'll drive the Mustang. You gonna cruise out?

The fan controller was $17 at Vato Zone. I used a 75a Bosch relay, $25 off ebay. A little 30a relay like what comes from parts stores wont work.

If you use just the toggle switch without a relay big enough to handle the spike in amperage when the fan comes on, expect problems.

Electric fans require more then 30amps???

the dual fan setup on my truck runs dual 30a relays not hard to wire at all really

Not for their constant use, but the spike in amperage when they start up is huge.

Can't blame him, the ol' Fox is pretty intimidating. Hell I couldn't even get Heatseeker or Ramone to race me the other night.

(Just kidding, guys, don't hurt me)

I ended up going out to Kellys 2 that night for a birthday. Supposed to have some nicer days coming up. Ok to be honest I was just scared and sat at home crying and singing emo songs while putting on black makeup and girls pants.

I think I liked the first excuse better...

Yeah hopefully I'll get some shit done to the car soon so it'll be a bit more prepared. With any luck it'll be at BWW again next weekend. Or actually depending what Poncho Dan figures out I might just cruise up to Jackson instead of doing both again.

Ever out during the week?

slickwilly
03-31-2008, 08:23 PM
Sure, but never down that far. At least not until I get the fans wired and a windshield so I can drive it to work. I take it out after work pretty much every day for a romp around Mequon. :D
