A buddy of mine just picked up a `84 GN in fair condition with 149k miles. Seems to run good but not perfect, trans seems tight, it has a factory sunroof/moonroof, and some aftermarket American Racing wheels that look OK....

I know what he paid but didn't know what to say when he asked me if it was a good deal or not......

So, what do you the fair market value is on it...???

$2500-$3K tops maybe and that's probably being generous? That's a lot of rounds and you make no mention of body condition, rust, etc. Plus it's a hot air car and they don't pull the resale that the intercooled cars do.

yup, 1984 is carb'd and hot air turbo. plus they made a fair amount of 1984's. Not real high production value. With a 1/3rd of the mileage and in mint condition I've seen em go for $5k-$7k

Depends on how much rust and how the interior looks, 2k-3k if its fairly clean...

84's are fuel injected, no intercooler......83 and older are carbed and turboed...

hmm, I thought just 86/87 were fuel injected. shows how much I know :D

Forgot to mention it's an AZ car, has rips in the drivers seat, hacked up radio area, inside door 'pull handle' broken (passenger side), doors sagging, pretty good PS fluid leak, and it misses at high RPM's......

That's about it.....:D

So does anybody want to guess what he really paid for it...??? If you get it right I'll buy you a beer the next time we get together.....:thumbsup

I'll give you a few clues ===> it's not more than 10k but definately more than $1500 and it's a nice rounded off number.....

2-3 years ago I almost bought a 85 GN, 65,000 miles, nice paint, perfect interior, needed a little clean up and the turbo was using oil. Asking price was $4500, I could get a good used turbo for $150 but even cleaned up and spit polished it was only worth 5-6k, Didn't want to take a chance on losing my ass on it.

I would have only paid $1500 for it but I'm a cheap a$$ that hates Buicks...............;)

$5K?!?!?... the person who sold him that car should be charged with rape... that or your buddy should be charged with stupidity.

I agree, he got hosed. The 84 Hot Airs are worthless compared to "the real Grand Nationals". Judging by your description it doesn't sound like this one was kept in very good shape either!

Very true, I just wish he would have talked to me first about it. I'm fairly knowledgeable about the `86/87's but still would have told him to wait on this `84. My first guess was he paid way too much and like always I hate being right.....
