It said qualifying income, that's the taxable income which is lower than what you get yearly. Those who collect some kind of SS benefit will not get a check unless they file a tax return for 2007. My GF on Railroad retirement survivor's disability will get nothing unless she files. She normally does not file. Non-resident and Puerto Rican persons living in Puerto Rico will not get the check. (Yes, Puerto Ricans are considered US citizens)

You don't know what you are talking about. You have the option to with hold taxes on your unemployment check as it is taxable income. This is what I did because I don't feel like owing anything.

So yes, if you are on unemployment and filed a tax return you will get a rebate.

Korndogg
03-14-2008, 08:58 PM
yeah unemployment is. I was talking about welfare though.

It's only unemployment and social security, AFAIK.

Your refund check will be equal to your tax liability, less any nonrefundable credits (except for child tax credit), it's explained on the back of your notice. Go to www.irs.gov they have a calculator there that will tell you what you're getting. For instance, my tax was $1800ish for 07 but after Dependant care expenses my liability was $344 so my refund check is $344 + $600 for two kids for a total of $944. I thought for sure I was going to get the full $1200.

I just found this.

For married taxpayers who filed a joint return, the first Social Security Number on the return determines the mailing date. The last two numbers of your SS number determine when you will get the check. Its between July 23 and September 24th.

Singles

Determine Eligibility:
If you earned less than $3,000 - unfortunately you˘d get nothing.
If you earned more than $3,000 but paid no taxes, you˘d get $300.
If you earned more than $3,000 and paid taxes, you get $600.
If you have children, add $300 per.
Determine Phaseout Reduction:
The phaseout levels begin at $75k and end at $87k, at a reduction of 5% per $1,000 over the lower limit. If you earn above $87k, you˘re over and thus get nothing regardless of the math.

Couples

Determine Eligibility:
If you earned less than $3,000 - unfortunately you˘d get nothing.
If you earned more than $3,000 but paid no taxes, you˘d get $600.
If you earned more than $3,000 and paid taxes, you get $1,200.
If you have children, add $300 per.
Determine Phaseout Reduction:
The phaseout levels begin at $150k and end at $174, at a reduction of 5% per $1,000 over the lower limit. If you earned above $174k, you're over and thus get nothing regardless of the math.

This whole thing is bullshit. Those who are paying the most taxes (and in the largest brackets) get nothing. Dont get me started. Even if they would have given us a percentage rebate of we paid in taxes, whatever that percentage is, would be a lot more fair and legitimate IMO. :flipoff2:

WRONG and WRONG. Read the back of your notice

"Your stimulus payment is your net income tax liability UP TO $600"

All they are doing is giving back your taxes (up to $600) unless you made more than $75K (single) or $150K married. Go to the IRS website there's a calculator there that will tell you exactly what you're getting all you need is information from your return.

My initial feelings would be that if they truly wanted to stimulate the economy, they would have given tax rebates to small to medium businesses to upgrade equipment and tooling to provide an up to date product and enhance productivity. Or to even lower prices. If they TRULY wanted to get the economy going, they would have helped to lower energy costs, because everything is based on cost of lights, heat, power, fuel for transport. They don't need to give money to a bunch of people who will be spending at wal-Mart or the liquor store.

that shouldn't matter, if you work, and have taxes taken out, you will get a check, as long as you had the $3000 taxable income

I will keep my fingers crossed, but all the articles I read about it (which were like two), I won't be getting anything because of the whole dependent thing. Oh well. My car insurance went down when they found out I will be living in New Berlin after I got rental insurance... (:

Forget the articles, get it right from the horses mouth.

http://www.irs.gov/app/espc/

"The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, which authorized the pre-payment of this one-time credit, stipulates that the payment is not to be made to any of the following:

* Individuals who can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return;
* Nonresident aliens; or
* Anyone who does not have a valid Social Security Number.

If you become eligible during 2008, you may be able to claim the credit on your Tax Year 2008 return, but you will not receive the advance payment this year, since that is based on your 2007 return."
