My boss just bought a HD Rocker... man that's a sweet bike.

I'm tempted, but I'd rather get my old school project underway first.

Vrod is a nice choice too, that and the Rocker are really the only HD bikes I like.

V-Rods are comfy, though it does look a bit silly when you see someone riding them since they sit so high above the bike.

I'll ride with whoever whenever, I don't like riding above the speed limit in most places anyways.

yeah i sat on one this summer and actually had to sit down in it, and im not that tall lol. But the bike actually feels pretty short even though it looks like a crew cab long box chevy truck for length on a side view in person hahah.

It felt pretty comfy stretched out to the bars all the way and the feet up on the pegs while it was on the stand. I cant speek for its stability but it felt like id have a pretty good leash on it for corners.

ive ridden bikes from a 150 rear up to a 330 rear. on the rockets i rode a 180.
ive never had a problem with any of them. the bigger rears just need a little more getting used 2. i dont plan on scrapeing my knees with the chopper LOL

Only reason why i do not ride rockets anymore is because i rode like an ass and would of eventually killed myself or someone else.

your telling me...I just did over $2000 damage to my bmw last monday driving down Silver Spring heading to school. I hit more than a pot hole...more like a fc*king TRENCH! destroyed 2 of my '02 M5 wheels, lower control arms and ball joints along with 2 tires, and it needs an alignment to ice the cake. Not to mention this all happened right by 70th & silver spring....need I say more.

I have been looking around for the last few months for a bike and I think I like the 08 HD Sportster 1200. Can I get some input from all of you on this bike?

I have this plan in my head to go to lake tahoe some day. If it is too far for two wheels alone, I'd trailer it there. I just want to go there so bad.

I took the course too, I knew how to ride prior but the course makes you practice thing you would not normally do.:thumbsup They are kinda dorks about making you wear ALL the riding gear. You know jacket, gloves that come past the wrist, helmet, riding boots. It can get a bit warm. When I went everone had to ride these silly little bikes with funky light bars so the instructors knew what you were doing. Because I could already ride well they let me use my bike!

Silver spring is god awful. Once you cross the Waukesha County/Milwaukee County line right by 124th street the road goes to complete shit. It has needed to be rebuilt for years, but now it is completely destroyed. Milwaukee county won't fix it though, they'll just patch it up which will last for a week.

I wish I would have taken the riding course, but I just took the road course a couple of weeks after I got my temps. Nearest place I could find was out in Madison that had an opening.

Almost failed before we even began because my rear brake lever wasn't triggering the brake lights, I kind of...um...had to keep my middle finger on the front brake lever and tell her to look again :rolf

Hell if I was driving out to Madison to fail because of a faulty brake switch. I did end up fixing it the same day when I got home. This was on my red 96 CBR F3

Now that I'm working at Harley I'll be able to ride in very day in summer. Odds are I'll ride the Ducati more because it will pull 55MPG to 35ish on the Triumph. Most times I average 20 or so on the Triumph due to excessive throttle application and a lack of common sense on my part.....

I have and always will be a Honda guy. Suzuki and Kawasaki might have the power and track advantage (debatable with drivers of course), but Honda builds their bikes knowing that only 5% of sport bike riders actually use them for track use, and build with a mix of comfort and twisty fun. I never found any of the competition near as comfortable to ride...especially Yamaha's which seem to lack any sort of low end power to cruise around town.

Not trying to start a hate post, because I love pretty much all sport bikes (except Buell)...I just love my honda's.

I have always been very much anti-Buell but have to say the 1125R isn't too bad. We've had a few come thru work and I've gotten to look at them a bit. The engine was designed by Rotax and built by them so it's a stout piece. I should be able to get one signed out over the summer and see how it is for the weekend. My main concern is that the people in East Troy manage to screw the bikes together right.......

The only real issue I've had with Honda/Yam/Suzuki/Kaw is that they go thru a cycle where everyone has one. The F4 was everywhere for a while, the GSXR before that and the the R1/R6 Yamaha's. Before that it was the ZX-6/9 Kawi's. I don't really ride as hard as I used to and to some extent I don't want to see myself going the opposite way on the road. It's the same thing that got me out of Harley's in the early 90's.

I knew the Harley fun was over when a guy in a mid 80's Vette gave me the nod at an intersection and his hairpiece fell off......... When he thinks you are cool you need to change your life!

T-bag, actully i have to agree 100%. I ride yamaha Dirt bikes (own one) and they love to rip. But as far as their street bikes i agree, they HATE to puts around town. My brothers honda doesnt mind it at all. I've been after a All black 06 636 or White/Black GSXR 600 so we'll see what happens.

Well i think i may decide on a diff bike than the V rod yet... looked into 08' Suzuki Boulevard M109R2's and have to saythey are pretty bad ass!

The thing is for me it looks incredbily alot like a V rod, yet the power is equal and the performance is probably better! The price is about 4G's less than a V rod too.

I would imagine they don't hold their value as well as a Harley. Import cruisers tend to hold their values better than sport bikes...but I wouldn't say on the level of a Harley

The catch is wheather I pay for it of I get it as a gift.

I have been threatend to be out of the family will. But when my old man brought this up, I reminded him that he said I wasn't on it about 5 years ago.

This is one of those things that they will object to for the rest of my life. I'll always call them ma and pa...can't escape that.

There's nothing wrong with a 1200 Sportster as long as you go into it understanding it's not a sportbike. They do what they need and can be all kinds of fun.

They are releasing the XR1200 in Europe and with a bit of luck they will come to the US. I have yet to ride one but the production versions I have seen look very close to this one:

http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/newsandupdates/harley_davidson_xr1200_sportster_prototype/index.html

Everyone that has ridden the test bikes love it so far, it's a step in the right direction to me.

The really nice thing about a Harley engine is that they are very simple and forgiving, almost like a SBC. They make a lot of torque and are fun to ride when you set them up right. The only real issue about riding an XL is taking a lot of sh*t from guys on bigger Harleys. Most people will bust your balls about being on a girls bike but unless they are making the payments and filling the tank they can blow you.

Another nice alternative is a Triumph Thruxton.

http://www.hermys.com/triumph/thruxton/

They are by no means a rocket out of the box but there is good aftermarket support for them and a well sorted bike will keep up with a 600 Honda on the track. There is also some charm in not seeing one everyday when you ride.

Maybe a Triumph Speed Triple? They have a lot of Mojo and are on the rapid side of things. Tons of aftermarket goodies and very resonable used.

http://www.hermys.com/triumph/speedtriple/

If you were to go with a Triumph or wantedf to look at them I'd recommend the dealer in Racine or in Janesville over South East Sales. Just a personal thing for me.

Alright. I'm not really interested in a sport bike. I want something that I can cruise 150 miles to up-north on or take lake drive down to Chicago on. My ultimate goal is to go to Lake Tahoe some day. Ya know, an "epic" cruise.

Tom, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY Better then a Vrod.

The VRod sits in the garage and therefor holds its value a bit better because the miles just don't get put on them. JUNK!

The M109 is a LOT of bike, and they are as comfortable as they are reliable. Then again if you want to jiggle like a queer eating a hot dog at every stop light, the v-rod may be for you.

A VTX or any Jap cruiser in that price range will be WAY more comfortable than a sportster.

Also shaft drive ftw

Update: I Am Signed Up For Motorcycle Riders Safety!!!!!!!

Also, I went to 5 Corners in Cedarburg to look at the Hondas. The first thing I noticed is that they are much wider than the sportster. I also had to lean farther forward to hold on, even with the bars that come farther back. Just sitting on it, the Sportster is waaay more comfortable for me simply because it is narrower.

I still want to look at a few other shops around town to get a better idea of what's available, but I also need to start and finish the riders course. I signed up earlier today and I start on monday. If all goes well, i will have my license on the 20th!

^ Which class did you sign up for? I can't believe you got in so fast, usually you have to sit on a waiting list for a few months. That is, unless you signed up for a private one. The private ones are big money, if you go through a tech school its less then 200

I paid 295 for the class at Learning Curves Motorcycle Riding School. If I waited a day longer, it would have been 345. This is the same place that does all of their riding in front of the Pedit Center.

Good choice I went there the bikes are well maintained (they take ALOT of abuse) hope on a style of bike like what your looking to buy then switch it up another day just to see if you might like something else. They have 250 sport and cruiser and 200cc dual sports when I was there....course the dual sport was as high as a cruiser when I was on it :rolf :rolf they're nice folks and willing to take the time to help you get it right. I like that above all they stress that you have fun while doing it. I think I paid 280 last year...must be the gas prices :thumbsup

Learning Curves bought 12-15 new bikes for this year. I was on a Honda Rebel with 3.1 miles on it. Within a mile, a lady laid hers down when trying to stop.

Update: I am done with the classroom session now. I can also now say that I have driven a motorcycle.

Done With Safety Class!!!!

I'll get my license on Tuesday and I also just got my check from Uncle Sam! wOOt.

I'm looking at Harleys. I checked out some Buells, but I can't put my feet on the ground well enough on anything other than a blast. I'll probably rent a Sportster to get a feel for it in the next week or two.

A little update:

I have been doing some deep research on motorcycles under the 10k price. Despite knowing very little about motorcycles in general, I have found that I can provide more comparison data about these bikes than just about anyone at the dealerships I have gone to. The only guys who were able to provide me with some really good info were one guy at Cedar Creek Motorsports and another at House of Harley. When I was at Cedar Creek, they had to go and find this guy because the regular floor person didn't know.

Kinda pisses me off.

typical sales people? :confused

Okay I've been lurking on here to long. BUY WHAT THE HELL YOU LIKE, if its two wheels its going to be fun. I myself am a Honda guy and own 4 of them
(1965superhawk,1976CB200,1989HawkGT, and a 2000RC51). Why? Because I freaking like Hondas but that doesnt mean thats all I like or respect. I hate the whole Jap VS Harley crap that seems to mainly exist in the Milwaukee city limits for some reason. Harley guys dont wave to Jap riders unless they are out on the backroad doing real riding and not city bound bar hopping runs. That said, I like all bikes and in a perfect world I would have a garage full of the bastards. Who wouldnt want a 1098R for a trackday weapon parked next to a custom chopper for posing, parked next to my hypermotard for commuting in town, parked next to my VFR for all day backroads sport riding, parked next to mile 2007 Goldwing with 45000 miles on it already! Like I say, BUY WHAT YOU LIKE, its your money and its your fun!
