So I noticed this morning getting out of my car at work a white spot, what looks like a big salt spot...after rubbing away salt I see there is bare metal exposed. I don't have any idea how it happened or when it happened, but what should I do to make sure this doesn't rust before I can get it repainted?

I would say clean it up and prime it with good primer??

Should I just goto like Auto Zone and pick up some primer and just clean it and spray it?

It'll rust right through the primer.

Might slow rust down a bit, spray it and wait until spring and fix it right.

I would say so and maybe touch up paint!
But remember it is cold try to get the car in a warm area paint + cold = not sticking so well.

Even if you touch it up, it is still going to start to bubble around where the paint was chipped off.

For a quick fix, POR-15 is very useful. Just remember you cannot leave exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time, so you will still need to prime/paint over it.

Why the hell did this shit have to happen in winter?! Damnit, I'm gonna take it by the body shop I always goto and see what they can do for me.

There is a product called POR 15, it is a rust inhibitor, works insanely well, a good autobody supply place will sell it it various sized containers. It's expensive, but VERY worth it. HIGHLY recommended.

the easiest way is oil it down or some bearing grease,it will disperse moisture and seal the area and keep it rust free.

i have some exp in auto body. If you want a temp fix, grind rust off, clean, prime, and some type of paint. you can usually buy auto paint in a spray can. If you only prime it moisture will soak through and start rusting inside out. if you do not grind out all the rust you mind as well no do anything at all.

Like said above though if you are looking for the easiest and least amount of work clean the area throughly, dry completely, and put some oil on it.

Hope this helps
