Today's topic: SHIMS

Where to use them. Post your experiences and how they have helped you in your everyday life. What types of SHIMS have you encountered? SHIMS come in all shapes and sizes.

I'll start. I like to use SHIMS to help plum-up a window. I'll be damned if its not hard as hell to get those suckers to line up straight.

I used some shims to angle a block of wood before I sent it through my planer. That way, I can make tapered legs for the table I am working on.

I've used angled shims under my leaf springs to get the correct pinion angle for Launchimus Maximus. I've also used shims under valve springs to maintain Revolucius Rapidus Ridiculous.

We obviously use shims a ton on our machinery/equipment to line things up, etc. My funny side note is that if you play online games, "shim" is the common slang term for dudes with chick avatars lol.

I had "Shimmed" something on my 91 Eclipse GSX (back like 7-8 years ago) to up the boost. Just put a washer behind the wastegate actuator diaphragm, it probaly gave it about .060" extra travel opening the wastegate or whatever. I sh!t you not, the thing was pushing 28Lbs on the Autometer boost gauge. The thing flew!!! Plus I exchanged all the turbo vacuum lines with wider diameter hose & re-routed some hoses. Other than that, the car was bone stock. :rolf Cutlass Queen & her brother Scotty can vouch for that one! Scott helped me out on that project. We beat a couple of Mustang Cobras on HWY when we cruised like every weekend.

I built this bench around that black toolbox under it. It weighs a LOT (pretty bad at guessing that kind of stuff). I used shims to tighten up the toolbox to the bench in order to make the bench more solid.

I call bullshit.
You would have blown the rods to the fukking moon with 28psi.
The stock 1g bov will leak long before that as well... you would have grenaded that engine in 5mins :P.

This is what happens when you run over 20psi on a stock car.

Sorry to hear what happened to you're application when you only pushed just above 20. I didn't say for how long it lasted, I sold the car shortly after I did that. Down the road, I heard through the grapevine that a similar experience (such as what had happened to you) had happened to the new owner. So sorry to rain on you're bullshit, but I surely had fun with it for the time that I owned it.

I used cardboard pieces as shims on a box-fan that was rattling.......stuffed them between the frame of the fan and the grate on the back, it was nice and quiet. Damn near anything can be used as a shim.....

I don't think that that's automatically true in every circumstance.

I had a '91 GSX that had an HKS exhaust, 'Shroom CAI, EVC, Turbo Timer, Super Blow Off (Junk) Valve, TDO5 sport turbo upgrade, PFC F-CON with a chip to match the 550cc injectors I was running. When I would fill up with a tank of Sunoco GT (100 octane) unleaded that the Butcher Block in Oak Creek used to sell, I would consistently go over 20psi with my car, after I removed the shitty blow-off that was holding me to 17psi. Worst thing that ever happened was right after I first removed the Super Fvck-Up Valve. I went WOT with the boost controller on manual and shut tight. It started missing right away and I thought I punched a hole in a piston. It turned out that I closed up a plug, instead. I regapped the plug (I'm cheap) turned down the boost controller a tad and never had another bit of trouble with the engine. The ABS unit was another story...:fire

I used magazine paper as shims for crank bearings in an old Dodge 1952 flat six. Old guy mechanic taught me that one. It really only works on slow turning, low compression engines. We also had a Korean chick at work named Shim.
