View Full Version : Recommend me a new home receiver

Since I know there's some home theater types on BCM, figured I'd toss this up here.

My old JVC DD Receiver done gave up the ghost last night after 9 solid years of service. After being on for about 10 minutes, it shuts itself down and flashed "OVERLOAD" on the screen. This was right after I turned it on so I know I wasn't overworking it all day. I'd shut it off, turn it back in in 15 mins when it was cold to the touch and the cycle repeated so... Time for a new one...

What's a couple of nice ones to look into? Nothing terrible fancy but no POS either.

I mainly use it for watching TV and DVD's in Surround and occasionally plugging the IPOD into it via RCA's.

Thanks!

I have a Denon AVR-788 7.1 and love it.

I love Denon receivers, my sister has a cheaper version, I don't think she paid much more than $300 for it.

I can get this one basically for $400. ($550 but you get $150 gift card back) Is that a decent price?

Jay does that do HDMI switching?

Mine does not do HDMI switching, only component. 400 is a great price, I think thats about what I paid.

When I bought my receiver a year ago, HDMI switching was not perfected yet, I read all sorts of reviews about how often they would fair, but I wonder if that has been fixed yet?

Do you need HDMI switching? I can't say that I'm familiar with a decent HDMI switching receiver.

I think I might look at this Onkyo HT-SP904 setup. My speakers are old as hell too and this one comes with an Ipod dock as well.

I appreciate the offer.

I can get the Onkyo SP904 setup from Circuit City for $630 as well but they will give me 12 months interest free to spread it out over. Gotta take advantage when I can to let the money still work for me while I pay it off.

nope, only component switching like you mentioned. I love it though. I used to be a Sony snob but Onkyo makes a GREAT product.

my dad has had nothing but problems with his Yamaha...enough that I would never buy one....he replaced a power supply, 2 sets of RCAs...he paid $800 for that receiver also.

IMO Harman Kardon's quality has gone down in the past few years (6+)...I equate them to the Marantz of Ole....USED to make bad@ss stereo equipment...but now their product quality isn't as good as it used to be.

I am a big fan of Denon. Second choice would be Onkyo. Integra makes nice products too.

Damn that sux, I remember dealing with a few yamahas that had P/S issues too. One of them put on quite a 'show'. The latest Onkyos seem to have a 'hollow' sound compared to previous years & not really a fan of what they've done. But I have an older Onkyo 6 disc cd changer & receiver to Infinity Interludes and not a single prob with either.

One of the things that draws me to Yam & Denon is thier zone capeabilities & IR circuits for advanced setups. For example, I can program a yamaha receiver via custom remote control (Pronto, Home Theatre Master or keypad) to turn on to a predetermined volume level out of the main zone or other zones if need be. Thier IR commands are rock solid and very very rarely hiccup.

best buy on hwy 100 near mayfair has the best selection of receivers of any best buy or circuit city i've seen. Make sure you go into their home theator area, the good ones are hidden back there.

Weird, my mom, dad and I together own... 5 or 6 Yamaha recievers (currently) and the only one that EVER gave us problems was the one he bought in the early 80s... The PS was coated in dust, he pulled it, blew it out, and put it back in and it was all good til a power surge around '00...

Personally I wanted to buy another Yamaha when I got our current surround setup, but I wanted something that I can put in the bedroom in a year or two that isn't big and bulky so I went with this Samsung all in one... Oh well, once this one gets pulled out of living room duty I'm gunna get a Yamaha receiver and some other goodies... :thumbsup

Understandable, I'm sure I'd be the exact same way if I had a bad experience with one. :thumbsup

I would Jon. If it puffs smoke or dies all together on ya, then you have the no lemon replacement to fall back on w/ it. ....'upgrade' :thumbsup
