So I've got Metallica: Cunning Stunts DVD.
How would I go about getting the sound off the DVD and turn it into a CD I can listen to in the car?

You could try to use a program like dvdshrink. When the program reads and decodes a dvd it places the files into 2 separate folders. 1 of them is an audio folder, the other is video. That would be my best guess

I'd rather leave it in the front yard and let the grass grow around it.

I am pretty sure that link that I posted in my second reply is everything you need to do. It is exactly what you are looking to do.
