Hey guys and gals I've been thinking the last few days about selling my mustang. I kinda wanna get a car that I can have fun in and also drive all year round. I was thinking of a STI or a EVO. I can still make it nice and fast plus I have the AWD, so I would be able to drive it in the snow. Of course this would take me selling my mustang and my jeep but, I was just thinking. What do you fokes think I should do?

Keep the Stang... IMO the STi and EVO are too boy racer...

I agree. But I'm biased. I really can't stand the EVO and STI. Regardless of how fast they are, and how great they perfrom, they just look ridiculous to me. But I could see why some people would want one.

I'm not even thinking about the looks. I'm thinking about fun to drive and better on gas mileage and all year round.

Better on gas mileage?

Ha.

Keep the Mustang! I'm sure you'll regret if you do sell it. Just get a second car that's still fun to drive (through all 4 seasons) but is still cheap.

i've been straped for cash lately. So a second car is definately not working its way into my budget.

What about something uber cheap yet still fun? A 5-speed Turbocoupe? Taurus SHO? Heck even something like a Cavalier Z24 5-speed can be pretty fun as a daily. You can get any of those for WELL under $2k.

I guess maybe but, it definately needs to be able to handles its own in the snow as well. I guess I didn't stress that enough in the first post. So AWD is a must.

You definitely don't need AWD to do well in snow. I mean, AWD is definitely better and sometimes more fun, but with proper tires the cars I mentioned would do GREAT in the snow. I was out driving around in my SHO on Wednesday afternoon on generic all seasons, I'm sure it would have been amazing on Blizzaks or something.

Wasn't there a thread on here talking about how some dude thought since his sti was awd that it would handle the snow and instead drove into a ditch?

Look into what was above mentioned and get some nice snow tires, and it will handle fine. I believe nismodave found a great type of snow tire.

Must have been tires or driver then, I drove my brother's 03 EVO in snow (with the OEM wheels and tires) and it was *amazing* in the snow.

Some probably come with some type of "sport" package which has only Summer tires or such... I know that's what some other cars come with...

Just make sure you weigh what you are getting before you buy one. Both cars are great and can be addicting to mod and make faster etc. The EVO you can make more horsepower with dollar for dollar but just take into account the fact that this will be your daily driver as well....AWD cars are hard on trannies etc as well if you plan on beating the snot out it...which if you need to start replacing transmissions in one of these cars, it gets expensive in a hurry.

They are GREAT in the snow with all seasons and outstanding with dedicated snows. Go drive them and see what you think and then make your decision

Given that you want something with better mileage, i'd probably just sell off the jeep and get an economy car then...something like a toyota corrolla/chevy prizm/neon/foci/yaris w/ a 5 speed. Get decent tires on there and sure...on the 15 days a year it snows you'll still wish you still had the jeep (but you'll still do pretty decent with the eco car)...whereas the other 350 days, you'll enjoy the substantially better mileage and very low insurance cost of the econo car. You'll have more cash in your pockets.

Then as summer comes, you may still want a different car, and you'll have a better idea of what you can afford given your finacial situation. You might keep the stang, you might get different ideas.

It's just that I don't think there is too much difference driving a jeep on regular gas versus an evo/sti on premium gas...at least it wouldn't have been in my case. I routinely averaged 19.5mpg in the cherokee...and might have been able to get mid 20's with more expensive gas in an evo/sti IF i stayed off the gas and had no fun. So my gas would be nearly as expensive, insurance would have gone through the roof, and I would have had payments.

I sold off my jeep to get the insight...because of the miles I drive a year, it quite literally has put roughly 250-300 bucks a month more in my pockets versus the jeep.

I consider our AWD 5.0 exploder fun in the snow and nice as a winter driver, And love our Stang as a summer car.
A 4 cylinder jeep that gets big six like gas mileage ? I see why the sadness.

I think EVO or STI or any other late model "awd performance car" with big wide stock sized tires=poop in snow, with snow tires/rims a different story.
I could be completely wrong tho and those "awd performance car" fanboy's will be here shortly to tell me how wrong I am and how great a car that sit's 8'' off the ground is in 14'' of snow. :rolf

Good luck too you in whatever you choose to do.

My FWD sits 3" off the ground with snow tires, and it's pretty much unstoppable :thumbsup
If my AWD Talon was running, it would be über.

Mark, why not look at a 2nd gen Eclipse/Talon AWD?

They don't look as "boy racer", get nearly 30mpg, and can be had for under $10k easy, most for around $5k.
Hell you could even keep one of your cars.

Easy to work on, and they don't really break down if properly cared for.
Spare parts can be had for next to nothing.
90% of the horror stories are from beat on junk 1g's that aren't taken care of.

Well I own a RWD muscle car and a 06 sti. Both are fun in their own ways. The STi will definitly need snow tires to be driven yr round. I had to drive mine once in the snow, it would accelerate no problem with the AWD set to full lock but would slide right off the road if you were not careful on the brakes. My STi with a simple stage 2 setup could easily pull high 12's and get 26-28mpg. It also handles great. I DID NOT buy it for the looks. I am thinking about selling it though and getting a 135i or 335xi in march. No point in having 2 toy cars for me.

dude hoenstly keep both of them for now if they are both paid off...if you really need the money sell the jeep and get your self like a fwd cavi or an escort 4 door.....they rip through the snow and you wont have any problems. If you still feel like selling the stang, I can give you a few sites that I have had luck selling previous stangs that I have had on. After that. If I were you, I would get the Legacy Gt....great styling, same engine as the sti with out the boy racer looks, and awd to boot.

LEG gt is a lot different then the STi. 50 less hp, different suspension, awd modes, turbo, upgrades etc. Cool car but def different then the sti in terms of overall goal.

You made the commitment to buy and mod the car just to turn around and sell it?

sell your Ford for a pointless Canyon.

In all honesty, I'd keep the Mustang for a toy, and why not go for a WRX as a DD/fun car?

I really want a WRX for a 2nd car, personally.

Not 100% sure, but I believe you have to run 93 octane in both the STI and EVO to avoid pinging.

So, if you are looking to save money paying close to $4 a gallon every week for mid 20's mpg doesn't sound like a better deal over your mustang. And that is if you leave either one stock. Something tells me an AWD turbo car can't be left stock for too long.

using gas mileage for a performance toy car consideration is stupid imo otherwise you wouldnt have modded it. you bought the car because you enjoy that kind of car, NORMALLY gas mileage is not a consideration. Get what you want because you want it not just because its a jerk reaction to winter and not being able to drive it. I would sell teh jeep for something cheaper but if you sell both, you will get bored with the awd as your ONLY source of transportation. If I had the cash, an awd dsm would be my number 1 choice after a cheap jeep.

If I ever sell my Cobra, I'm gonna buy a 4 wheel drive turbo-diesel pick-up, either Dodge or GM. I like both the Cummins or the Duramax. The trucks can be made very fast, they get decent mileage, and will get great traction with the right tires in the winter. Do it right and you'll be able to drive right over the top of those ugly be-winged jap kiddie cars you're considering, rain, snow or dry pavement. Plus you can haul a ton of shit around with them. Get a crew cab and you've got a bunch of room for your friends/family, as well.

not an awd car, but if you are still going to do this crazy change, why not get your self a nics VW GLI.....A friend of xxtremeteam's and mine has one and it impressed me with how well it hung with an evo and an srt4 on a rally we were in last year (thread to come soon).....6th gear at triple digit speeds plenty of power left over, hauling 4 adults, and the car was mildly modded.....

Go for an Audi S4.

You can avoid the boy-racer image and still haul ass. Also, your significant other will like a car with cruise control and power heated seats to. Subaru and Mitsus suck for long drives. The S4 doesn't weigh that much more also.

The 2.7t makes 250 hp and you can get it over 400 with minor bolt ons and stock turbos.

You can also piss off the rice-boys by talking with a German accent. The key is to replace the word "and" with "und." They will think you are straight out of Bavarian and think you can really hold down your beer too. You can also say "well, mein auto was designed for the Nurburgring." They will be like "you mean that track is real?!"

Al
02-15-2008, 10:38 PM
The S4 is also decent on gas. If you want more utility, get the wagon.

I should also mention that 2001-02 Allroads are cheap right now. You can pick one up with 60k on it for $11k.

Another neat car is the A6 or A8 with the 4.2l V8. THese cars are also cheap after 5 years old. They have no major reliability issues and drive far better than a BMW or Benz. You can expect mid 20s for mileage all the way around. They get geared down low in top gear so that they sip fuel at 70 mph.

These are mens cars. You wont expect to see some snobby 17 y/o driving one of these around.

BTW- if you are wondering about the "unintended acceleration" of the early 90's, it is due to the brake and gas pedal being close together for heel-toe shifting.

Also, audi's are reliable. They get a bad rep from a few who never check the fluids or can't drive stick. Ask the owners of these cars and you will hear the good things about them. Just avoid Alpine imports for repairs. Just search around untill you find a local garage that knows how to use the "lock carrier."

personally, i think you should keep the mustang. any car can be driven through the snow as long as you take it easy and be careful, i don't really care about anyone's opinions to the contrary, by the way. our 1989 RS camaro has been doing fine through this weather, and the only time i was too paranoid for us to drive her to work was the day we got 15-18 inches of snow, and no one's cars/trucks did particularly great through that one, according to the news. i'm not interested in anyone's boasting about their 4wd/awd srories here, either. your mustang is the pictured next to your screen name, correct? if that is it, it's far too beautiful to part with. no reason to get rid of it. get some really good snow tires for it, and just drive it, it'll be fine.

my buddy bought a EVO new in 04 had it for 6 months and got rid of it, it sucked in snow he was pretty pissed because the dealer said they are great in snow.

I hate to say it, but you are very wrong. with the RIGHT tires ( same for 2wd trucks ) its not bad. I LOVE driving mine in the snow.

I have a Evo, looking for 800hp this summer. I have fun everytime I get into it. grant the wing is off, I dont have a big loud exhaust. no stickers. Im function of fashion. ( stop tech brakes, 18x9.5 for autocross etc ) its not a boy ricer in my eyes

after this year of drag, ( or even in the middle if I get bored ) its being turned into a dedicated road course car. ( NASA, and hopefully goto nats for SCCA ) ( I have 6 years of bondurant racing school under my belt, and I helped teach classes for skip barber in elkhart for 3 years )

now again, im baised. for some...they think its boy ricer..and even more so since they are more "affordable" now. just pull of the car on how you make it

also, I had a S4 prior to this car, chipped, exhaust, ko4's, intercoolers, intake, thats it..I think. I put down 452. BUT it wasnt nearly as fun as the evo. it rode decent. far from reliable ( timing belts and turbo's are a *****! )

My brother has a STi, its a alright car, but once you make decent power, you hit a wall where you have to spend a CRAP ton to make more ( and be somewhat reliable )

prior to this new build, I was at 604hp on BR's dyno, and NEVER had a problem ( besides be filling up with 89 octane once, and it was getting KR up the arse! )
