Who has 'em? Some friends and I are going to get some for our trucks so its easier to keep in contact on the way to the track and just for general purposes. not looking for anything over the top, just a basic, cheap cb system. also, since we arent the ultimate hillbillies, anyone know of any decent window mount antennas? the only ones i have seen are the midland ones and most people say to not waste your monies. thanks.

this is a srs thread.

Why not just use two-ways? They're fairly cheap, and now-a-days have pretty excellent range. I've got two rechargeable Cobras with a charging stand.

we tried that last year, but the range pretty much sucked, we got some that said 18 mile range or something, however never got more than a mile range or so.

Hm, that's shitty. I'm just too lazy to go to the effort of setting up a CB/figuring it out.

alright, here is the inner geek in me.....

window mount antennas are crap, if you look at a ERP graph, (effective radiated power or something like that) you will see that since the antenna has a poor mounting location in relation to the overall size and dimension of the vehicle, that your range will be pretty poor. your best be would be to buy a middle of the line CB radio with a GOOD antenna, I used a wilson 1000 for a long time and that worked great, typically speaking with that antenna and a ok radio, id say that 5 miles was pretty doable with little or no signal fade. Try to get a Uniden CB or an older Cobra and maybe spend the 35 dollars to get it tuned by a professional, that and a good antenna and you should have good communication for a decent price.

Is there still some chatter on the airwaves? Its been some time since I used one.

I have a Cobra 29 nightwatcher, works great. When I ran a co-phase antenna setup (two antennas, I had two 4ft firesticks) I literally got a 10-20 mile range front and back, just not from side to side. Co-phase usually works best on a forward to backward range. Right now I'm using the same CB with a Wilson 1000 magnetic roof mount antenna, and still get up to 10 miles on a good day. The antenna I have runs about 70 bucks, CB can get over 100 bucks.

i used to have a clipped and peaked cobra runnin a thunderbolt antenna with a amplifier and a little 4" bulb on the end when i would key it would light up LOL man thats like 12yrs ago though when i first cruised and then i got nicer cars and wouldnt put the magnet mount on my cars so i dumped it all except the thunderbolt

that sucks to hear about the window mounts being sh*t. i really dont want to put a giant antenna on the truck, however we are looking for 5+ miles of range. and pickard when there are 4 or 5 of us, its a lot easier to make one call on the radio that they call can here, than to make 4 or 5 different calls

I do a lot of offroading, and have a permanent mount in the roof of my rig.
Around town, I unscrew the antenna and cap the mount, but on trips it is a lifesaver.
Proper tuning with a SWR meter is key.

I used to have a pretty mean Cobra 29 LTD Classic with a K40 whip back in the day.. like 15 years ago, LOL. Had my uncle SWR tune it for me and I had alot of fun with it.

I used to have a 102" whip in the right rear corner of my rangers bed. Looked like an RC truck but worked good. Otherwise I would recommend a WIlson 1000 , used to have one of those too. I used to have President Jackson Export radio back in the day. Now I just have my worked on Uniden sitting in my garage:goof

Id say spring for the mag mount, K40s are OK, Wilsons are proven to be better, there are a few other brands that are ok but for the money go for the wilson mag, put it right on the center of your roof, and run it directly into the radio, no 90 degree bends, or anyhting like that, if you do get a radio, tweek it right away, even with no kiker you will still have a lot better signal becuase you will swing 10 or more watts out of the back of the radio as opposed to 5 watts. Pork, what type of amp is it?

the wilsons are nice because the antenna lead is not embedded in the base like the k40's. if your lead gets cut on the wilson, you can unbolt it from the bottom of the base and buy a new one at radio shack for like.... 10 bucks. if your lead gets cut on the k40, you cant just splice it back together, so basically the antenna is junk.

You sure its got a cummins? :alcoholic

How can you take such a nice truck and garbage it up with stickers, big rig style stacks and chrome rails?

I suppose its just personal preferance but I really think that looks like shit.

When I used to travel ALOT for work I got one for the Intrepid.. It helped to pass the time when I had hours and hours of windshield..

Although, I kinda felt like a 'poser' as I was always picked up of the crowd for not being a trucker.. That dam metal thing sticking way in the air off of my trunk gave me away..

I still have it if someone wants to buy it as I don't travel much any more..

I think the stacks are gay, especially since they are fake duals.

^ El Camino? He has a crew cab doofus. The fake dual's are pretty weak and the bed rail poles are fugly on anything imo. I don't mind the sticker if there was only one.

The amp is a White Tornado 225 ( 225 watts, oops )

Inline-6, Bingo.

You can still see two plumes of smoke coming out of those stacks FTW.

I like stacks.... I just think there is too much length after the bend to the exit... I would rather see the cut a couple inches instead of near a foot after

wahh wahh, chevy trucks only come with 245 tires so therefor its not a truck wahh wahh.

are you serious? its black, round, holds air, and has tread.... who cares what the size is? I'd still take the chevy over a dodge even on a bad day in hell.

The 245's are for carrying heavy loads, whats the point of having a 3/4 ton if your going to use it the same as a 1/2 ton. If you havent noticed, not many companies make a larger 8ply tire for a 16" wheel.

i think ur thinking 10ply because D rated 8ply's pretty much everyone makes. E rated 10plys you cant find over a 285-75. i run a 8ply instead of 10 just because my truck only pulls my 30ft 5th wheel 2 times a year.

as for the stacks, the length after the bend is the style. there call bullhaulers, or what ever people can come up with. i didnt want to do what everyone else has like mitres or turnouts and i think straight cuts are for true hillbillys lol though i think there cool you just wont find them on my truck.

with out bed rails and prior to the leveling kit and 03-05 badges

its a aftermarket 150gph fuel sytem to feed the injection pump so it doesnt cook it. when u start tweaking the fuel injection like injectors, programmers it start to use all the fuel the stock fuel pump can push. On the 98.5-02 cummins they have a Bosch Vp44 injection pump, it lives on fuel lubercation. They are WELL known to fail and one reason is lack of fuel pressure either caused by the shitty ass stock lift pump failing or not being able to serve the fuel. The white things are 2 filters. One for water/air/fuel seperation and the other is the fuel filter.

seems like dodge cant build a transmission to save their life......

Friends mothers 99ish Dodge caravan has 80k miles on it, and is on its 3rd transmission.
My friends 95 Ram 1500 with a 5.2 was at 120k miles when it needed its 3rd transmission
Any Dodge cummins truck with an auto I was ever interested in shifted like PURE shit, and would probably need a transmission soon
My neighbor had a 94 ram 2500 with a 5.9 auto setup and he sold the thing right before the 2nd transmission pooped out on him and stepped DOWN to a 92 Ford F150 with an inline 6 5 speed manual and was HAPPIER with it
