house FTW. Paying all that interest on the mortgage nets a LARGE return. I don't miss the renting days at ALL! :banana1:

Usualy if you own a busness that is a huge benefit, unless your just raking in the money.

Interest on the house helps a ton, plus my house is a duplex so I get to right off a bunch of other stuff too(that will be awesome when I build a new garage and I can right off half of it)

Interest on student loans and home equity loans is all tax deductable too.

People adjust your deductions to minimize how much you get back at the end of the year. Using the IRS as a savings account is lame.:thumbsup

Also what form do you use, or what do you fill out on the interest on student loans...

TIA :thumbsup

Any of you do your own taxes? I have every year until this year, I'm now a home owner (duplex too) there are quite a few things I'd like to not screw up on and max out my refund. I hope to get more than last year which was about $1300 total as a single renter.

all you guys suck, i must have messed up my taxes this year or forgot to change my deductions on my w-2's last year, looks like we get a big refund of 200 bucks thanks to the state making us pay their greedy asses

Crawlin
01-30-2008, 06:53 PM
about $2200 it looks like. definitely sucks that all those taxes go in and nothing comes out.

if I would have just put one W2 in(since i get paid out of 3 dealerships) my refund would have been double that, hahaha

This year I get to claim 2 of my 3 kids. ( My ex and I alternate years. ) I did mine online through TaxAct as I have for the past few years. I'm getting $3546 back this year. No plans for the money as of yet, thinking about getting rid of the Contour and getting an SUV though.

Why would you say that?

Flight_740
01-30-2008, 07:24 PM
Because I did with one kid, renting, and being single.

Did you claim daycare? that is if you need it. mine only added about $400 to my return but it was considerably higher than yours.

moels
01-30-2008, 07:28 PM
Well, it depends on what you earn and what dependents you are claiming. I claim 3 so I get more on my check and not let the gov't make interest on too much of my money.

Yooformula
01-30-2008, 07:29 PM

Thats a crock of shit. I can see getting back WHAT you put in, but not MORE. Thats the most assanine thing in the world and it irritates me to no end. So I pay a assload of taxes all year long to get squat back but put more money in people with childrens pockets?

Top things to know

In Lesson 18

1. If you get a big refund each year, you're having too much withheld from your paycheck.

In effect, you're giving the government an interest-free loan.cont.

Example::thumbsup If you are getting $3000 back you could adjust your deduction and net an extra $50 a week on your check and still have $400 come back at tax time. If you feel you can't save it, have the extra $50 auto deducted to a savings or investment account. Would you rather earn the interest on your money or let the government earn it on your money?

The problem with that I wouldn't earn any interest on it. I'd spend the extra cash AND have credit card debt. By getting a nice lump sum back I atleast have something to pay off some bills with. In theory that's a great idea. But in general practice I would bet most people would come out worse.

As for deduction for children. That doesn't bother me near as much as how much I pay in property taxes with the majority of that amount going to schools. The fact that I have a house and take pride in it and try to make it as nice as possible, should not penalize me. When a neighbor with 3 kids, but lets his property go to hell pays less to send his children to school then I sending no kids to school, that really aggravates me. Especially when all I get from it is a screwed up order from McDonalds when I go in cause the kid educated with my money is still a freaking retard and can't understand no mustard means, don't put mustard on my sandwich.

Call me a heartless bastard but I could really care less. If you need more money, get a better or another job. If your getting back WHAT you put in, great, im happy for ya, you SHOULD get back every single dime. But if you get back MORE money then you put in, thats what irratates the hell out of me.

It eats me to no end that the thousands and thousands of dollars that I pay into taxes every year go to shit I could care less about and other peoples pocket.

Very sore subject for me, i could rant on and on about this for hours.

Really too early to say for sure. But it's like $75K for singles, $110K for couples right now. Anything over that decreases the amount you would get, have kids? that would increase it.
