View Full Version : Why does my internet get super slow?

Just wondering what is wrong with my internet.

when i first start my computer the internet is running fast (the way it should be) Then after 30min or so it gets as slow as dial up and i have to shut my computer off and reset my modem. i should NOT have to do this ever 30-60 minutes that i am on the internet. the computer is BRAND NEW. the Modem is brand new along with the cables connecting it.

Should i call my provider and see what they say?

Also i ran Norton and it found nothing, ran Ad-Aware and again.. Found nothing?

ping external sites.

like do ping -t google.com

and see if the ping times slow over time. Don't get too crazy and ping flood with huge packets either.

If they do it's somehow your connection being gay, and also run task manager to check out your network utilization, and check what ports are allowed free reign via your firewall and whats not.

if the pings stay the same, and your utilization is OK, I'd next look at pinging your router and doing the same, and ping your modem too.

see if theres latency there too.

lastly take a look at your available ram, and the memory useage, perhaps between all the adware, and porn your computer is sending out tons of traffic, and at the same time, all that crap running is killing your computers speed too.

If you need more help, let me know.

start

run

type in "cmd"

then type "ping -t google.com"

watch the ping times for a long time. to stop the endless pinging, hit "ctrl + c" or just close the session.

which speeds will also vary hugely depending on where you live, what service you use, and the time of day you use it. If you live where I live, it depends on what my neighbors are doing, as we share a local connection, (I have cable). If you have DSL part of it could be the distance from the home run and quality of copper. Satellite, well it just sucks, too many things negatively affect it's quality.

For example right now I get 5.1mbps download / 485kbps upload on my wired side. If I steal my neighbors wireless I pull 4.8mbps download / 402kbps upload

That alone shows a sizeable speed decrease pulling wireless from distances.

Because someone is using your computer for it's bandwidth.

You either have:

A. something that Norton's / AdAware can't find.

B. like Dan said earlier, have freely open ports that should be closed to incoming/outgoing traffic.

C. if you're using wireless, everyone is leeching off of you because you don't have WEP enabled.

A. Any other things i can run and find something?

B. What do you mean by open ports? When i look at my network it says it is a privite line

C. I'm not using wireless?

D. I hate computers.

when i moved in the condo my roommate and i secured all the unsecure networks that our router picked up. Those people must have wondered why they couldnt sign on the internet anymore haha. i know very little about computers but my roommate is a computer guru. he has his security plus certification and going for his cissp right now. so i go to him with all my computer troubles

is it something you are plugging into your computer? if it is thats a nic card and yes your network could still be unsecure. you have to secure your network yourself.

i just bought a wireless router and card for my laptop and its all hooked up after a couple hours spent on the linksys support chat i got it all working, next to the connection there is a little lock symbol, its kind of pissing me off because everytime i turn my laptop off i have to do a bunch of bullshit to get the connection back

there should be a little computer monitor looking thing lit up on your task bar near your time double click on that and then hit view wireless networks that should tell you what one you are signed on to and what other ones are in the area.

when me and deanna got the wireless router to get wireless on her laptop it asked us if we wanted to make the connection secure, which we said yes to. it then gave us a code and told us to write it down. (im guessing this code is the password) and now nobody can get on our wireless connection. My brother even had his computer wiz friend try to get his laptop to connect wirelessly to our internet and he wasn't able to

and just so you know, im pretty sure flicks problem has nothing to do with charter b/c i live about a mile from him and have charter and haven't been having any of the problems he's been having....well my computer runs slow but that's bc there's a bunch of shit taking up ram but i can't erase the hard drive bc my mom has shit on the comp and woun't let me put it on backup discs
