I was very lucky to get this thing to start after an hours worth of trying. I stopped an bought a external hard drive (160gb) an spent the last 4 plus hours transfering all my pictures and Docs on it.

So, my trusty Sony Vaio Laptop has served me well for 5 years, and I need a new computer.

Im thinking another Sony, but Id like to hear some opinions from people in the know.

BTW, I dont know if this thing will stay running/restart, so might be a while before I see the thread again.:goof

Toshiba, or another Sony... Maybe a Dell...

My Toshiba laptop has served me since '04, and it's still workin good... And I've had a Vaio laptop in the past that was a good laptop as well... My Dell work laptop is rather stout, and it's a hand me down from Atlanta so that thing's gotta be tough... I've had bad luck with other brands...

I've had a few others and will only buy Toshiba or Sony... And possibly a Dell...

I have had a Toshiba laptop since about 2002. Works great, had to replace the hard-drive $60 bucks and a new dvd burned $72. Best investment I made for college. I'd buy another Toshiba anytime. They have the nicest screens and keyboard layouts. When looking, make sure it feels comfortable to you. Also, I highly recommend a cooling pad/stand for it, they make a huge difference. Toshibas have loud fans, so the less it has to turn on the better.

I can't speak for out of warranty Dell computers yet, but so far Dell has bent over backwards to be sure I am happy with my laptop. I ordered mine with the best warranty they offer, 3 years with accidental damage policy etc. So at this point I would highly recommend a Dell. Every time something has gone wrong the tech is at my house fixing it within a day or two of contacting Dell. They have even Warranty swapped the laptop twice now due to mild overheating issues. Yes, I have had problems with my computer, but Dell has been there every single time. Of course I will also be purchasing another extended warranty in about 6 months just to be sure Im covered.

I too have had nothing but great service from Dell. I have probably had half a dozen or so PCs and laptops from them over the past 5-10 years and feel they are typically some of the best performing computers you can get "off the shelf" for their price range. I just bought my daughter a laptop from them, for around $500 you can get something really decent - dual core, 15.4" decent screen, 1 gig of ram, 80-100 gig or so HD, etc. That's about as cheap as you can get for a decent usable laptop. Of course if your into games or what not you can get much better from them as well. My personal laptop is an XPS M170 I picked up "used" for like a grand about 2 or so years ago -17" screen, geforce 7800 GTX, 2 gig of ram, 250GB HD, etc. Still runs all the newest games at high settings and decent framerate. You can get similar XPS M170, or its replacement the M1710, or even newer XPS laptops for around a grand or so on Ebay or other sources. Some of them are even new still.

As far as out of warranty service on Dell's, it is pretty weak through them. They want an arm and a leg for their parts through them. However, due to the fact that their PCs and laptops are sold in pretty high volume, there are numerous parts sources websites and Ebay that you can score parts from fairly cheap.

Sure the customer support of dell is good, however how much did you pay for them including the warrenty....What I dont like about dell is the quality of the machine is about that of an Acer and the cost is about as much as a VIAO..Want a good computer with great tech support, and a service plan that is better than dells (covers accidental damage and is in your house service), see me...I carry SONY, Toshiba (which is what I have as my laptop), Hp (like what coop has)...........oh and I can do the toshiba and the hp (even if you get the hp bundle) for less (in some cases a lot less) than a grand, and the sony for under 1200, walk out today with the hp and the toshiba......(the sony will have to be ordered up, unless you want pink lol)

Like I said, the last Dell I bought right before Christmas was $500 or so like $515... and free shipping. Sony and Toshiba are significantly higher priced for similar specs. Basically it had:

Intel® Pentium® Dual Core™ T2330 (1.60GHz/533Mhz FSB/1MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista ® Home Basic Edition
Glossy, widescreen 15.4 inch display (1280x800)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
Size: 120GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
CD / DVD Writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card
Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam

Intel integrated graphics is nothing to get excited about, but it was for my daughter who plays zero games. IMO a mid range dual core processor, 1 gig of RAM, a decent screen, and a DVD burner is about all you need for a useable utility system and $500 is pretty hard to beat.

I would highly recommend an Alienware. They can be upgraded later when new technology comes out which is something you can't do with most laptops. Unless you are one of those brainy guys with all the equipment. Their customer service is top notch and they have a great line of products. Not a lot of people know about them but serious computer gurus do. They never really advertise either. They are known as one of the best computers you can buy for off the shelf.
