When I bought my car I could see that the rims needed a good polishing but after spending hours and hours over the summer trying to get them to shine really good and not getting anywhere with them, I asked around on here and other boards and a lot of people told me that they would need to be sanded and then polished. I want to get this done before spring so I have been searching some forums on how to do it. I also was looking at powder coating just for shits and giggles and came across some smoothie II's like mine and I kind of like them. What do you guys and gals think of the powder coated? Or do you think I should just sand them and repolish them so that they shine again?

Powder coated!

Or polished!(these might be chrome i guess, but you get the drift)

They both look nice.
I think the powdercoat route would be easier and possibly cheaper.

i really like polished look, however powdercoating would be easiest to both care for and initially do.

If you look in his sig pic his car already has the Boyd wheels and they need some work to get them back in shape.

I like how those look on your car to John. Are those gun metal? How much did it cost you to have them done? I was looking at classic coatings out of Sheboygan and they charge $75 per rim. Is that a decent price? I've never had anything powder coated before so I haven't looked at prices before.

I also like the look of the powder coated smoothie II's. Think I might look into it. I am going to the world of wheels tomorrow and I see they are going to be there. I will check them out.

Thanks for all the reply's.

The story on those wheels was an absolute mess & headache, but couldnt be happier with the final result. Heres the cliffnotes:stare....

The fronts (17x9s) came powdercoated gunmetal and the rears (17x11s)only came polished. Ultimately because absolutly no one (trust me- No one) could powder coat the rears to match the fronts AND give me the perfectly crisp lip I ended up taking them to Crystal Autobody to have them all scuffed and painted the same. The resulting handmixed color they came up with was very very close to the origional gunmetal color and looked awesome. Crystal wrote down the formula for the color so when I have more rims painted they'll all match perfectly. :thumbsup

From what I found out and went through, your better off having the rims painted and having the lips just masked off IF you want a non-colored lip. What they do to get the lip Not coated during powdercoating is that they actually powdercoat the whole rim and then go back over it with a jig thats setup for the specific rim and machine off the powdercoat on the rim's lip- giving it its perfect & crisp edge. I found that out from a few companies that make takeoff ZR1 & other OEM styled wheels. That they quote the gave you is for coating the whole rim.
