I was stopped next to a bald headed black woman fib in a Phaeton at a stoplight on Hwy 41 and Rte. 173 over the state line about 2 years ago, only one I have ever seen.
Beside you can buy the best one with good miles for $35k today :D

Very few folks knew or cared thats why its no longer sold in America.

From the old reliable WIKEPEDIA.COM

In the United States market 1,433 Phaetons were sold in 2004, but just 820 were sold in 2005, leading the company to announce that sales in the American market would end after the 2006 model year. The rare W12 models have been held on to by niche collectors and are harder to find in the used car marketplace.

We have a customer that has one that he drives. Never would've pegged the guy to drive one, let alone one that is doo-doo brown. The other guy I was working with couldn't understand why I kept talking about it.

"Wait a minute... so it basically has TWO little V6 engines on the same crank?"

"Well, yeah."

"Who would be dumb enough to do that? And wait, its HOW MUCH? Isn't it a VW?!?"

:rolf

Gotta love the people I work with.

You could pick them up dirt cheap then too.

Most went for the mid $80's because dealers just could not move them. It was the least expensive 12cylinder car you could buy. Now the Lamborghini Gallardo uses a 10cyl version of that motor.

The phaeton is a poor mans A8 W12. The audi variant has more aluminium in it.

The W12 is more like two VR6 engines, which have a 15 or 17 degree V, mounted parallel.

I think the new V10 is not a W or VR. Supposedly, the W12 is being phased out in favor of the simpler V10.

the phaeton shares the same chasis as the Bentley flying spur.

That's the reason it's out in this weather still. It's a ******* VW!!! I don't care how much $$$ a car is, it's still a VW.

:P
It's still a nice car... not like they just dressed up a Jetta and slapped some badges on it.

Regardless... if you have the coin to drop on that, you could at least pony up for a decent winter beater instead of ruining a future collector car.

It's a sedan it's supposed to be the daily driver! People who own 100k+ sedans drive them year round and have a cooler fun car for the nice weekends.

As many have already mentioned you can pick up a phaeton for $30-35k nowadays, making it the best luxury car bargain out there. Autoweek even voted this a better car than the Mercedes S-class of the time. They are top-notch luxury cars and were on par with the big dogs, but the VW brand doesn't have the snob appeal.

That is precisely why it didn't sell well and precisely why it was a DUMB idea to produce that car.

As far as driving $100K + cars in winter time..... A big majority of them are leased anyways, so why care?

most are leased yeah but also if you can afford a 100k car you can afford to wash it.. if it can handle the snow then so be it. id drive it to..
