Hey BAD-LS1, and everyone,

i have a friend who bought a new GTO, with the T56.

When it was Very cold, and he first got into it and drove it,
Obviously, the ATF is cold,
and his complaint,

Is, it will SHIFT HARD, until it warms up.

so i know Synthetic ATF will make the cold shifts easier,
but
you and i know that Regular old Farm Fleet 80 cents a quart ATF
works the best in my "Beat the living $4it out of My camaro"
on the Road Course's here in the midwest!

SO, QUESTION IS
should he use Synthetic ATF in his GTO T56??????

if so,
what kind? what Brand?

THANKS for your help all.

Everyone in the GTO community goes with Amsoil or Royal Purple.

Just remember due to the angle of the trans, in the GTO, they actually take 4.6 quarts, whereas the f-bodies are just 4.0 qts.

No... ATF is like 10W and is easy to move, synthetic or not in cold weather. I would make sure indeed it has ATF in right now and not something else. Synthetics seem to **** with the friction coef for the synchros and ultimately will create a hard shift issue has been my finding.

Is it all gears or certain ones? If it invidual ones, then something more might be going on. If all, then just try some fresh farm-rated dexronIII

I was told by D&D trans when they supplied some parts for mine to NOT use synthetic oil in the T56.

Ok.. So this is my issue that Mike was talking about.

Mine is hard in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd until it is warm.. Then from time to time, if feels like I just F%$ked the shift up and feels like a little gear grind. As it gets warmer, it goes away.

No problem with 4th, 5th, or 6th R they all go in like eazy

Thanks for looking out for me Mike

I would just drain and refill it to see how much and what is in there.

stock shifter by any chance?

Yes it is the stock shifter and prolly the stock fluid. Bought the car used with 9970 k miles on it and it had a single owner. Me and SSmike are going to be replacing the stock shifter with a Hurst to start and just wanted to make sure we know what type of fluid to use. Hopefully that will resolve the issue.

At least thats the plan

THANK YOU for all the replies!

GTO MIKE,
Tom, Yoo, Ron, and I recommend you use
the Farm Fleet Dexron III that i have in my garage.
i am just about to change my T56 with New ATF,
my Winter Time Fluids Change!
..................................
the Gas Filter,
ATF
Rear End, Again, just plain old Cheap Farm Fleet Gear Lube, NO ADDITIVES
spark Plugs
air Filter wash.

The Engine Oil gets Brand New Synthetic before every Race weekend!
10w-30

PS
Tom,
speaking of T56's, MY T56 has been doing GREAT on the Race tracks
since the Rebuild!
I beat that car Like i stole it on the race track!
ask ANY of the people who see me race it, or ride with me!

It has been performing like a DREAM!

THANKS
:)

You are using Dexron III ATF right?

Just looked it up in all data for a 05 with a 6.0 and it calls for 4.6qts of Dex III

just my .02 cents

i have been using Farm Fleet 79 cents a quart
dexron III mercon universal ATF.

Just ask BADLS1, GTOmike1, or RD08RNGR

it is a 2000 SS Camaro M6, that i have over 30,000 RACE miles on her
at road courses throught the midwest USA.

the cheapest ATF Dexron III Mercon equivelent works!

:)

THANKS
