If its not heating im sure the thermocouple is shot, other then that if its the gas valve I would just replace the whole thing.
You can get a thermocouple at and hardware store I believe, a 30" will work fine.
If you were closer man I would stop by but your 25 35 mins with traffic from me, so how's that one room heating ?

And glad to hear you got it covered, was it a huge mess like they normally get (bottom basically falls out of them, causing water to be everywhere), or did you catch it in time??

I had that happen to me this past summer. was leaking pretty damn good. My neighbor is a plumber and he helped me install a new one.
