Lots of cool stuff in there for those of us who are history/aviation/military/technology buffs. Think we can get a group buy?!

Anyone know what that one right outside of Chicago is called? I caught a glimpse of it on the way to the Sears Tower about a month ago. Was right off I-90 just across the state line. I could see a bunch of helicopters and various other equipment. Anyone?

That is actually a guy that use to be on the West Frontage Rd. in Kenosha county. He says its a military "museum" but it really is a glorified boneyard, Kenosha county kinda kicked him out under duress and gave him a cool million for his 40 acres of I94 frontage, he lives down there near Wadsworth IL and he moved his "museum" to IL.
Mark Sonday I think his name is, use to have a conversion van place along I94 with the space shuttle lookin van in front, the van thing turned out to be a front for a huge cocaine selling operation. Supposably he makes a ton of many selling engine and stuff off Vietnam era choppers.

2 things that we should have not done away with, the A-10, and the F-14.

that damn 30MM cannon sounded like a semi jag break at 12,000 RPM, and one large cloud of smoke!

word has it, there are people guarding the tomcats, with condition one wepions, because some middle east counrtys have them, but there inop, all thay need are parts...

Where is this exactly? I was down in tuscon yesterday and we stopped to get gas at the airforce base there and stumbled across a huge boneyard like pictured. Wondering if its the same one.

EDIT

Holy shit I think it is:

They have AMARC on one of the "Boneyard" episodes on Discovery channel.

The F14 was simply too expensive to operate with regards to upkeep manhours per flight hour compared to the F/A-18. Also with the new and 30% larger 2 seat F-18E Super Hornet released it could do almost everything the F-14 could do with the exception of carrying the AIM-54 Phoenix long range air-to-air radar guided missle. Those had ranges of up to 250 miles and each Tomcat could carry & launch all 6 simitaneously.

The 1 thing no fighter will ever do is have the badass look of the Tomcat

(just for you Yoo!)

We sold the Sha of Iran about 80 F-14's in the mid 70's. They didnt have all the 'kill features' our models do;) , nor did they get the GE engine upgrades. They have the old Pratt & Whitney engines. Whats left of the Iranian squad is believed to have been adapted to russian armaments & engnes.

That use to be my back yard when I was stationed at DM. I would sit out back with a beer and watch them chop up b-52's. I wouldn't plan a seperate trip there but it is OK to look atr if your driving by

You ever get to go dig through the DRMO salvage yards? We used to go in there looking for "salvageable parts" and end up leaving with driveline parts and engines from old base trucks and whatever else we could find. I miss having access to free parts that no one gave a shit about....

No man, not anymore. I did manage to get my hands on a nice 5 drawer tool box from DRMO (just because the guys didn't want to lift it into the back of a 5 ton and said I could have it) that I sanded, repainted, oiled and now use. That stuff is under lock and key these days. I know a guy that was trying to buy a Hummer off of one of the .gov auction websites for cheap, but decided it was going to be too much of a pain as they're not street legal and you can't test drive/inspect before you pay and have to pick up.
