View Full Version : Server blew up... lost alot

9:30am Dec 12, 2007

The server took a royal crap on me. Supposedly the power supply blew the motherboard and both my hard drives (master & slave).

The slave drive is were the backups are kept. It gets a little crazy trying to back up 300 MB sql dumps nightly over the internet. I didn't think I would get hit with an act of god and loose both hard drives at the same time.

My colo provider took all day to get me a new server to load what I have backed up. I best backup I have locally is from 8-9-07, so I am loosing a considerable amount. I am still trying to get my provider to send me the hard drives so I can attempt data recovery on them. I have no idea why they are fighting me on this, but I will escalate the issue. I'm tired.. I've been at this server restore all day. I'll update you all in time.

good night.

Screw them, they can line up for a refund...

Andy, if anyone knows what you went thru, that would be me. I feel your pain, I am quite sure most people really have no idea what you went thru with this crash. I applaud your efforts and I truly understand what you have gone thru.

Imagine having 100 or so websites with many forums like this on your server and having the same thing happen.

The shit behind the scenes, I think people have no idea how much work there is keeping these websites going.

Get some sleep, and don't worry about lost posts, I'm sure they'll make plenty more...

All-nighters FTW!!! :D

Data Center Manager finally gave us a callback regarding why we got 3 different stories as to what really happened.

Apparently the server literally caught fire. The inside of the box is completely charred. I asked for pics (not just for proof, but for a memento), we'll see if they'll actually send them. There's talks of a compensation package as well, so we'll see. Their trying to make right. They did agree to send me the master drive but they said it was ticking. A data recovery place maybe able to salvage data. (not just for BCM, I could care less if we lost a few months of useless banter) but for all the other data that was on the server that I didn't have up to date backups of.

that's the new server not the old. I'll be migrating to it once I get it configured and in a rack. This one will be collocated in Brookfield hopefully.
I'll need at least a week to know anything about the hard drive.

I do know how to do some data recovery myself. But I am willing to pay if the platers need to be transplanted.

What type of Box is it. I can script somthing out (free of charge) and you can fill in the variables to shoot the backup to another location. take 10 minutes to once you have a place to land the data.

and important saved pm's..with addresses and phone numbers.....some were clients....what do i do...

That does suck!, I wouldn't have relied on a message board to store my important info. though :wow
Even with Andy's l33tness, some things happen beyond anyone's control.
You should have at least just copy/pasted your client info to a notepad/word file as it came to you.

There is also a great free office suite called OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) that has exact functioning replicas of Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Access/etc.) :thumbsup

If it is that important make sure it's backed up. Depending on a board to backup critical data probably not the way to go. there are plenty of ways to control a disaster so you dont lose your data. Do some research and find somthing that works for you

I'm sure this suggestion will end up in the shredder too, but... :D
It's not very hard at all to backup the SQL database to a local machine, if you do that even once a week, you at least have the forum backed up and you don't lose months and months of posts. We probably over-do it but we've had our server on MMA go down and we only lose a few days worth, if that.

As for people who lost important PM's... Are you aware that you can download your PM's as text files very easily? Just view them in your inbox (or outbox for that matter), select the ones you want to save to your local machine and select "download as text"
Then you don't have to worry about losing them when things like this happen.

Don't intend to ruffle any feathers here, just making some fodder for the shredder.

damm, I never knew that great tip Greg.

No problem Yoo. You also could help Andy out as can any other Admin with full Admin CPANEL rights- Look down on the lower left menu board, all the way down at the bottom, and under MAINTENANCE menu there is "Database Backup"
You yourself can pull a backup down to your own computer or external drive, the only "problem" there is if the file becomes larger then the server "timeout" setting Andy specified, you will not get the file to download. If that becomes the case, then scroll down farther in the main window and see the "Backup database to a file on the server" option- You can have Andy create PW-protected directory for those backups to go to, and then once you are doing that, make SURE that you also take the added step of downloading that file via an FTP program that has the ability to compress the backup so the server won't time out.

Now you have extra backups of your database files. If the server goes down again, you re-install VB, then restore from your backup and you're back in business. ;)

I just got caught in a moment of weakness. I'm normally better backed up. I had cronjobs dumping nightly to a slave drive, but alot of good that did me.
stupid and I know better.

In the past I have become "complacent" when things are reliable over long periods of time. I have learned the hard way to expect trouble and redundant backups are part of the solution.
Something worth mentioning though...

Lot of people like to just make post after post of garbage, chit-chat and useless drivel. What they fail to realize (I think) is that every single one of those posts causes the database to grow larger and larger and larger and the backups take longer and the restore process takes longer, etc.

It's not my business, I'm just mentioning it because I see it on a forum I help operate where we have millions of posts and over 100,000 members. They love to complain endlessly about how slow the server is, and these same people make thousands and thousands of posts with the stupidest things you can imagine. Much of it is stuff they saw somewhere else on the web or had sent to them in an e-mail. And it;s supposed to be a "tech forum" first and foremost.

Anyway, I meant what I said Andy, I know what you guys go thru and it can make you crazy.

I have gone ahead and taken a couple of pictures of the failed hard drives and the blown capacitors in your server. I will attach them to this ticket so you can view them.

I have also approved our supervisors to go ahead and ship this failing hard drive to you. Please provide the shipping address you would like us to send this to any any additional information you think is important.

Please keep in mind that you will need to approve the charges for shipping as they will be billed to your account.

Please provide your approval and shipping information and let us know if there is anything further we can do to assist you.

Thank you,

Not sure if anyone gives a sh1t, but the plot thickens...

[WARNING NERD TALK]

So I get provisioned a new server. I get all 93 domains configured, restored, etc... I was doing some troubleshooting on a single domain issue and happen to peak at my /var/log/messages to find out its flooded with smartd messages about bad/unreadable sectors on my new server/harddrive.

So I end up having to migrate once again (hense this past outage Sunday Morning). The provider has no access to Ghost, TrueImage, or hard drive imaging software which would of turned an all night/day job into a 10-20 minute fix. Their solution was to setup another new server and use a migration tool to copy domains over (this takes a lot of time for 93 domains). The new server has 1 new IP address. So when they decommission the old server I have add all my old IPs to the new server and reconfigure 93 domains' DNS back to their original IPs (or else wait for DNS for propagate to new IP). When the new server was swapped back to the original rack location it wouldn't recognize my original IP addresses, only the new one which is useless beyond migrating data too. This is a classic ARP caching issue. I spent several hours on the phone trying to get anyone with a damn clue or access to clear the MAC address in the ARP table on the switch. Well before that could happen, it resolved itself (ARP cache timeout).

Look's like it resolved itself.
Well that's one way to look at it... or you could say your too slow or incompetent to understand the issue and fix it in a reasonable amount of time.

[/end rant]
