View Full Version : Actually working on the 64

I expect that the fact I am actually working on my cars means the world is about to end. I got the headers on now what a PITA both sides had a tube that hit. Driver side was the lower control arm mount and the pass side hot the upper control arm itself. A little cutting and a little dinging and they're in:banana1:

Need to get some convertor bolts and put on the exhaust I am picking up this weekend and it can come off the jackstands. :headbang

Then it's on to the interior....

Already done:headbang

I do need a cam change though. It's got your basic generic 214/224 performer type cam. Going to go with a Voodoo stick next.
Here's right after I dropped it in.
Gotta take off the valvecovers and repaint them. They're the Oldsmobile embossed ones. I just threw them on there so the blue is kinda out of place.

Not too crazy of an engine, but it should be a fun cruiser.

About time :D . This one is pretty clean too right?

Rocket Power

Yep , it's a southern colorado car. There is some trunk rust, but I think it's from a window or some other orifice leak everything else is clean.

I now have the exhaust for it:headbang
3" Pypes x-pipe setup with Hooker Maximum flows for mufflers
I traded a friend for my 2.5" g-body x-pipe setup that I had on my 86 for a bit.

Wow been a while since I worked on the car I guess:rolf
Well since I don't have homework to do anymore, I've been working on it more.
The exhaust is tacked together, going to pull it off to finish welding it up, when I change the axle from the 8.2 with 3.08 to a 71-2 Olds (no c-clips:headbang) 8.5 with 3.42's. I should be at least pulling out the old rear this weekend.
Put on a set of Accel 300 plug wires I got from a friend. Still need to get some new plugs.

I have a Lunati Cam that I bought this spring, but I am going to wait to swap it till later.

In the last week I bolted up the torque converter, got the through bolts for the motor mounts. Found the P/S pump off my Vista that I'll be using until I decide if I'm going to go manual or not.

I ordered some bushings (.69/ea @ McMaster- Carr) for the baseplate of the 800 cfm Qjet I'm going to use for a while. Beats $60+ for a bushing "kit" with drill bit. :goof I have access to a drill press and mill at work so making straight holes shouldn't be a problem .:)

Got the tailshaft housing off the trans to replace the bushing and seals this weekend too.

I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, it will run this year and I'll have to figure out an interior, but it should move under it's own power this summer :headbang

Well that's all my rambling for now:rolf

Will do next time I'll be out there for more than a few minutes at a crack, IIRC you're fairly close to me.

Was seeing how these covers look today, got them from a friend in a trade, and yes the orange and rust alt bracket is already off and will be getting stripped and painted:goof
They are TALL, looks like manual brakes for me if I use them

I went over to my friends to rebush my q-jet baseplate (used his drill press rather than going all the way to Burlington to use the one at work) , which cost me all of like $3, sure beats those $60-80 kits they sell:rolf

No, different friend that has a G-body now and I traded him some g-body stuff I had for them. I like the way they look so it looks like manual 4 wheel drums for me. Just have to plan my stops 10 minutes in advance:rolf

My current garage floor is crap with big cracks all over letting some water get in in spring but its been almost two years and I haven't seen any ill effects. If you don't have larger cracks or water getting in it shouldn't be too much of an issue, no?

Rocket Power
06-02-2009, 06:24 PM
I do have cracks in the floor, they are strategically placed to grab the wheel of my creeper about 6" from where I need to get to :rolf

Same here! One half of mine is also about .5" taller than the other side or so, I really miss my parents and old apartments garage floors. But at least I get both of my Montes in a garage now vs only one. :banana

why not clean it up and paint it before putting it in the car? That's a good idea.:thumbsup Sometimes I get in the "I just want to get it done " rush. I think I will, I believe I still have some paint left.

Rocket Power
07-25-2009, 02:54 PM
Got the rear in today. Still need some shocks, it had air shocks and I took them out to use in my wagon:goof
I did paint it like yellow wagon suggested, now it makes the control arms look bad:rolf
But it am going to pull them out and box them eventually anyway.

I also pulled out the manual steering box from the other 64. I figured I'd just clean it , paint it and put it in. Yeah couldn't be that easy, someone in the last 40+ years either broke one of the bolts or it broke on its own. The bolts look OEM since the two I took out were getting thin between the head and threads.
Letting it soak with some PB Blaster right now , then heat and a vice grips will hopefully get the stub out.

Rocket Power
07-27-2009, 12:01 AM
Yeah PB and heat from my propane torch didn't work. Heat and wax didn't work. My buddy got it out for me with a mill and some chisel/punch/ torch work. It seemed like the bolt was hardened, it laughed at drill bits:stare
That bolt was no joke.
Now just have to paint it and swap them. Famous last words......:rolf

Got the Manual box in ,only about 4 1/3 turns lock to lock:rolf
crappy cellphone pic and before I adjusted the column so the new ragjoint wasn't all out of sorts:goof

Yesterday I started another project on the car.
This will either turn out well or will turn out as a "but it looked so easy on that website" type project:rolf
I was going to pay to have the seat recovered, but I looked in my wallet and I didn't see any money in their with the cobwebs and moths:goof
So I started by taking the old covers of of the pass seat. Yes covers as in two. I bought this seat set from an Olds guy down in Racine Co., they are from a 64 Cutlass Sport Coupe. He got them from either NV or AZ I forget, both covers were trashed from the heat and sun. The foam is crispy , but the springs, frame and tracks are in good shape.

Clearly red seats aren't going to go with a blue car, unless I was Superman or something:goof

Like an onion these seats have layers

Well I ordered a couple things from my favorite supplier (www.rocketracingperformance.com) yesterday:headbang
Since I want to use my cast alum Oldsmobile script valve covers (http://usera.ImageCave.com/vista461/olds covers.jpg), and they are really tall. I had either order a tiny brake booster or convert to manual brakes.
Manual it is, while I was at it I switched to a dual res master. Because 4 wheel drum brakes are suicide enough without the suicide master:rolf

So yesterday I ordered vette style master and manual brake pushrod, along with some seals so I can repack the wheel bearings while I throw the new shoes on.:banana1:

Rocket Power
05-12-2010, 03:33 PM
Finally got around to putting on the master and covers, along with an air cleaner on top of the lift plate:goof

Rocket Power

Been playing with it more lately.
Converted to a dual reservoir master and to manual brakes with the pushrod now cut and installed.

New brakes hoses front and rear, new brake lines from master to dist block, and from dist block to rf wheel. New line from Master joined to rear line.

New brake lines are easier when you don't have to route around engine and headers in an already tight engine compartment.

Also got a new bushing installed for shifter linkage, as the 46 year old original one is missing.:goof

Didn't realize it had been this long since I've done anything to the car. :rolf

Well I've made the vow that the car will be running and driving this year. Enough procrastinating, life's too short as has been shown to me all to well as of late. Seat covers/door panels are getting done by someone who knows what they are doing (ie. not me :goof) soon as I get my tax money back, so I imagine they are going in to get done in February.
Sometime this week I need to get some kerosene for the heater too.

So my list of whats left is...

1) Carb (either redoing my Holley or redoing one of my Q-jets)
2) Seats recovered
3) Console refurbed ( new carpet for the sides and new paint for the top)
4) Misc hoses for engine
5) Shocks
6) Check out the wiring harness, I have an extra if needed
7) Armrests
There may be a few other items too, but that's the main stuff.

It won't be perfect, but it will be my fun street car with some trips to the track with friends. Once its running and driving improvements will come.

Then it will be onto my wife's car.....
