How do you know how many times to spin the spring to get the right tension? That's the only thing I'm concerned about.

its really up to you on how much tension you want it to have, how much assist or how fast you want it to go up.....

easy way too do it is take chalk or a paint marker and with the spring untensioned make a line and as you turn it count the lines it makes most garage doors its about 5 full turns

biggest thing to worry about is that the bar doesnt slip out of the little hole, if it does youll end up eating it. And when your untensioning the old spring Ive heard they can shatter, some guy told me to put duct tape over it first. I decided to wait and have a pro do it.

its easy as long as you dont die doing it

i'm willing to bet that those who say it's easy, either A) want to see you die or B) have never done it.
DO NOT ATTEMPT fixing these springs, save yourself a trip to the ER and just call a door guy. My friend owns a garage door company and I've heard MANY horror stories of guys who attempted replacing tension springs. If you want his number, drop me a pm.

when my spring popped I got my home warranty to pick up the bill. I wasnt even going to attempt to mess with a spring that winds up over 500lbs!!

No it really is easy, ive replaced them before on some overhead doors at work. As long as your carefull and dont rush it you will be fine. Pay attention to what your doing.

Trying to elminate the competition eh... :shades

That article says you might be able to find someone who will do it for $100-$150... that's basically what we'd have to pay for the springs anyway.

He also said home warranty won't cover it... but if Yoo got it covered, worth a shot :)

home warranty wont cover the spring BUT a garage door man that wants to make a sale will bill it as something else;)I also got a new garage door opener because the tech said it was bad:shades all paid for by the warranty:thumbsup

If you are doing one spring of a set of two do them both at the same time. Mine cost about $130 for both springs.

Springs got here via DHL around 8:45AM. Got both springs for $76 shipped. The door is functional as of 10:30AM. As a few of you said, it was super easy. Nothing like an engine swap :)

I'll have pics/writeup soon if anyone is interested at:
