We bought a laptop a few months back and the DVD writer took a shit. I'm sure I could send it in under warranty, but can I just get any slim drive for it, or is it different sizes for different brands?

I see some name brand drives on ebay, I could just pick one of those up instead of getting another ACME drive from the manufacturer.

what kind of laptop is it? I just had to replace my dvd multi-drive on my toshiba laptop. Why wouldn't you warranty it out? I was able to replace mine for under $100 and the new drive seems to be working much better than the oem one. I went with a pioneer slim drive with a slot load. less parts to fail and it came with a 1 year warranty.

Well, if I gotta send it in, and they replace it with the same junk that it came with, it'll just die again, and sooner or later warranty will run out, and I'll pay anyway. Ive been reading online of many problems with the brand of drive thats in it, it is an Acer laptop.
