so i took these at meet in madison last night...why the hell am i getting so much nasty lens flare? and what can i do to prevent it?

canon rebel digital xt
18-55mm kit lens
uv filter
10 second shutters on a tripod in "tv" mode using wireless remote.

my guess would be the UV filter is do a lot of that....do you have a hood on your lens? That would solve most of it.

hmmm didnt think about that...next time ill take it off and ill have to look into getting a hood.

try using AV mode instead. I do a lot of my night shots with that and dont get as much lens flare....

No UV filter for me either.

A polarizer will step you down a couple stops but helps with glare

that first pic looks like they are ghosts!!!!

That is actually fun to play with. Set for a 10 second exposure, have the subject stay in place for four seconds then as quickly as possible move to the next position for the remainder of the exposure.

Looks like this. He bumped the car (looks out of focus, but pipes show the car moved) otherwise this would have turned out great.
