whats the diameter of the cylinder, I have a 4.25 400 grit ball hone

Maybe 3" or so. Would a bigger hone fit in a smaller cylinder?

Auto zone has that free tool rental. Just measure the size you need and stop in there. I think you have to put a deposit down on what it is worth and then you just return it when you are done.

They only have the tri-stone hone to borrow. I was told ball hone would be better since the other one tends to taper the cylinder?

the tri hones are actually better, but yes they do taper if u dont know how to use them.
