Im going to be moving soon out to the new house in burlington, anyways along with the million of other things I need to do. I need to get my fencing for our horses set up. Im looking for old telephone poles or other large diameter wooden posts to use as gate posts and corner posts to run the electric fencing around. If anyone knows of anything, let me know. Full length or cut up. Id like about a dozen 7 foot sections or as i said before, i can cut up full length.

Up on the way to the dells on 60 and 33 they're re-doing all the old poles, so if you rented a logging truck i'd run out with ya at night and snag a few haha! Or you could just ask what they're doing with em

Most of the times that stuff is just tossed, they say they're going to use it but don't always believe it.....

There are piles and piles or railroad ties in the Vernon marsh area on the sides of the railroad tracks. There are hundreds and hundreds I would imagine, they weigh a fuking ton though. Just grab a decent sized truck and head on down to the marsh and grab a bunch :thumbsup

Problem is, they are illegal to use as fence posts because the black coating that is on them "creosil" is very bad for the environment and can contaminate your soil not to mention it would kill the horses if they chew on the posts wich they do. If i could find some that were just natural, uncoated, taht would be great.

I am a lineman for WE Energies. Give me a week and I will see what I can do for you. How much of the pole were you planning on having stick out of the ground? The "rule" for putting poles in the ground is 10% of the length plus two feet. So a 5 foot pole would be 2.5 feet deep. So figure how much you want sticking out of the ground and then add on from there. Also, how big of a diameter do you want?

What diameter are they? Whatever you see most common i guess. I need about a dozen 7-8 footers...... I cant cut them up myself.

True, hmmmmm maybe some has a stump that needs attention.

they come in all different diameters 4" to 20" on shorter poles (30'-45') If you have a trailer stop by and ask the crew on the side of the road, there is a good chance they will load it up for you. Might cost you lunch or a case of beer.
