...and to see how well you guys know me, I want to see who can guess what I bought (and what hilarious off-the wall guesses ensue). It's almost like a 20 questions format in a sense... (Now answered on page two)

I'll give you the first clue:

It is a two door.

...and trust me, I think most will laugh.

Prince Valiant

Yep, a 2000 Honda Insight. The new DD.

Since I drive some 45,000 miles a year and spend ~ 7000+ dollars a year on gas, I thought I'd do something to reduce the cost a bit.

So hyper-obnoxious mileage was sought. (61mpg city/70 mpg hwy)

Found this one at a price I couldn't pass up and bit.

I pick it up on sunday in Iowa.

Have you checked the MPG yet I heard they were over rated and that the government is going to make them recalculate the MPH for next year. Oh I almost got hit by one in a parking lot they are so quite I walk right in front of one because I didn't hear it behind me. Bet it's nice and quite in side though.

Have you checked the MPG yet I heard they were over rated and that the government is going to make them recalculate the MPH for next year.I will be checking on the way home on sunday.

There are more than a few that achieve better than the EPA ratings (some are in the low/mid 70's combined over the life of the car), but of course, there are some that don't.

The ones that don't aren't really a reflection of the car though imo...it's the individual's driving style. THE most important mod one can do as it relates to fuel mileage is the right foot mod...

And of course, the more extreme the mileage rating of a vehicle, the more one can knock it down with poor driving.

This not only includes excessive acceleration, but excessive speed, constant on/off the gas, constant speed changes, extreme speed changes (IE, slowing down too much for corners...cuz then you've got more to accelerate to normal speed, etc) and just plain aggressive driving.

The owner reports mid 60's driving 75-80mph in his own experience...faster than I normally cruise, so I anticipate no worse.

I've also heard how people drive those car barefoot in Japan so they have more feel for the gas pedal and don't step on it so hard.

hope you got a good deal on it chris, cause for the price of those turds, and the fact that it looks like a fruitcake mobile, i would score a civic or corolla or something, and enjoy that. 35 mpg isn't exactly shabby, and you wouldn't need to tint the windows to hide

I think they are cute....

Although I wouldn't drive one.

Moparjim

I am extremely disappointed... I would have thought it much more your style to do something like pick up an 80s Omni (keeping it Mopar!), strip it down to like 1500 lbs and either go small diesel with a 5 speed, or make your own hybrid or electric like people do with the old Rabbits. Thats what I will do if I ever really need gas mileage...

Prince Valiant
05-12-2007, 12:36 PM
I know, I know. I actually even looked at a Rabit diesel too. Looked at some 02 Jetta diesels as well.

But how it broke down was like this:

I didn't want an old inexpensive omni/civic/rolla as a commuter only car because I don't have the space to keep a commuter only car at this point (got the duster, valiant, shelby...and up until recently the jeep and only a one car garage)

I DID want a TDI, preferably a wagon with a 5 speed. I actually had a couple in line to purchase for reasonable prices (6500-9000).

BUT, I came across this guy for less than the cost of any diesel I had been looking at. Less cost for the car, for better mileage than a diesel, for fuel that is at least historically cheaper than diesel (even if it's not now)

SO, I figured, here's the commuter car...I've still got the cash from the jeep sale, and a little more and now I've got a hyper effiecent ride. I will LITERALLY save ~ 450 bucks a month in gas.

THINK, what could I purchase and make 450 buck a month payments on? ESPECIALLY since I have ~ 15,000 saved toward a down payment on this upcoming car, along with the sale of hopefully a decently fast/clean duster?

That, plus the CSX will be heading down to texas soon, and the valiant may make it one more summer before going the way of the dodo, while the 318 that'll be going in that will probably find it's way into a late 80's dodge pick-up/ramcharger.

During this time, I'll probably be moving into a new house around holy hills area...all while working in Greendale.

Well, that's the plan. Nothing's ever in stone.
