Anybody know anything about them.

I have about 1.5 acres to cut and I'm just looking for the best deal. I don't need the 'Cadillac' of riders...just something that's gonna be reliable and somewhat reasonable in price. Anybody with any experience?

If you wanna replace it in 2-3 years see fleet farm or any big box store. If you want an investment that will last, and have a service network... Simplicity. You get what you pay for in this market.

I have a 4 wheel steering model in my backyard...it works great, if looks a little rough. Pretty quick and strong for what it is too.

It's my brothers, but I want it gone...I can cut you a decent deal I think. I'll check with him.

I don't know specifics and it sounds like you have a lot to cut, but my parents have a Murray that is older then me and runs great.

Although it helps that my dad is an ex-mechanic and will never let the thing die or resort to buying a new one. But he swears by his Murray!

lol the company i work for owns Murray... and um yeah... i worked on them for 8 years... As i said you get what you pay for, i can hook you up with a pallet of arbor spindles for the deck if you do go that route! LOL

Stop telling people that. I keep hoping that someday everyone will forget and we can pretend it never happened. Maybe even get EVA back again someday.....

HA HA HA :rolf EVA... Yeah thats why i was hoping he would buy a brand new simplicity so that would put a little something twoards that EVA we might get 10 years from now:durr

Maybe that new "LAWN THUG" murray will save us all:wooo :rolf :goof

i know one thing that might help that EVA... a good half dozen MEGA-CANES this year!

Home depot sells some middle line john deers, they are pretty nice machines. I know a few people that have them and are very happy with them. I cannot justify the price of a simplicity, they are nice, but WAY overpriced.

I've heard the John Deers at HD are sh!t....lol. From what I hear they are hardly John Deer at all.

hmmm....ok, I have two friends with them and they cut around 2 acres with them... Had them for about 2-3 years now with no issues. Who knows though, mabey they are crap and will go out. Just going off what ive seen so far.

Try taking one of those Home Depot John Deeres to a Deere dealer once and see what kind of service you get. lol

i would go with a john deere. i am looking too for my cabin up north. home depot has the smallest john deere on sale for $900, might go with that one.

I can imagine, its not a 20-300K tractor.....

+3453453456 for John Deere. But, go to a JD dealer and get one there, not the Home Cheapo Deeres.

The better JD riders keep value well and are bulletproof. Example; on our farm we bought a little 175 hydro in '89, paid $3200. 15 years later mom and dad go to trade it in for something bigger/newer, and got $2200 for trade-in. That little bugger cut acres upon acres of yard and plowed snow every winter. Best little tractor out there. And with keeping value like that, you can't go wrong.

So yeah, get a 'real' Deere.

(note; I'm very biased towards JD since we have 5 JD tractors on the farm as well - 620, 3020, 4020, 4020 with pump turned up a bit :), and a 4255)

so i need a tiny john deere riding mower. you are telling me that if i go to a john deere dealership and look at it i will notice a difference between that one and the one at home depot? i am not trying to be a smart ass it is a legit question. are the home depot john deered produced at a different plant then the deeres at actual dealerships?

the Deere we got kicks ass, it one of those ones with the turning wheel on the back, sucker rips for a lawn mower, does it in like half the time the old tractor did

For the most part yes. Like the Toro branded riders at Home Depot are really made by MTD.

The big box stores sell at price points. So corners are cut to make the prices. You most likely won't even find a JD dealer even selling the same models as a Home Depot. However, they probably for a couple bux more have a much nicer piece of equipment. JD has a great relationship with their dealers and wouldn't put them in a position where they couldn't compete.

My mom has a Craftsman & half an acre, runs fine after 3yrs, no problems.
They all will last as long as you do the maintenance every year.

Sharpen the blades every 6-8 mowings or so.

Yeah...my wifes boss has two different houses...each over an acre. He told me just to buy the cheapest rider because they all take a sh!t after 5-7 years anyway...lol.

How does that craftsman do on hills?

I have a craftsman that I do 2.5 acres with. Hydrostatic drive and no issues on hills or anything. I wanted a Briggs motor, so sears had them. Paid a little less than a $1000 and it has worked perfect the last two years. No issues at all and I mow every week. Not to mention it had a cup holder for my beer!

Works just fine, just make sure you position your weight to the highest side of the hill for extra security :)

My mom's got an MTD and it's still doing good with her maintinence schedule (hardly ever maintaining it) after 8 years... 16hp Tesmesh (or however it's spelt)
Price: $895 @ home depot with free delivery
Yard: 1.5 Acre Non-Landscaped (bumpy like no other)

My dad's got a Craftsman and it's still doin good with his lack of maintinence after 15 years... 19.5hp Turbo Cooled or whatever Twin Cylinder Briggs, Hydrostatic
Price: 1995 @ Sears with Free delivery
Landscape: 3 Acre Landscaped but VERY Hilly

My mom's neighbor has a John Deere 318 with a 24 (or so) hp Kohler and it's about 20 years old, but the motor is about 10 years old...
Price: 5,000 PLUS 1,000 (New motor)... And yes, it was ALWAYS maintained right... 2-3 oil changes/year, new plugs every year...
Landscape: Relatively Flat 4 Acre

I wouldn't hesitate buying a cheaper one...

I use a John Deere Hydro 175 out at a lake property that I cut at. Got it new back in 1987 and I still can't kill that mower. It has a 14hp Kawasaki engine.

I use a 2 year old John Deere LX 280 at my dads house that he bought new. It has a 18hp Kawasaki V-Twin engine and it's a nice tractor but I think he paid over $5,000 for it. It has a 42" mulching deck on it.

I think you can't go wrong with a JD or a Simplicity. I wouldn't get one of those Home Depot tractors though unless you aren't going to be putting a ton of hours on it.

8 second 60' times.

I am selling a sears craftsman with 18 h.p kohler engine, hydrostatic trans, 46 inch Mulching deck, new blades, also new rear tires, new battery, cab enclosure, extra offroad lites on top of cab for winter snow blowing or plowing, also has a 2 stage large snow thrower, also a snowplow, wheel weights, Tire chains, weight bucket, added also is a volt gauge, and oil psi gauge,Not a single problem with this tractor. Moves tons of snow, and cuts grass excellent..I have over 4500.00 invested when purchased in 1996. I will take 1500.00 for the whole package.

It is in good shape for age of unit ,And everything works great. Attachments have rust on them, but all work perfect!!! I always serviced this engine with synthetic oils.
