Three Fond du Lac High School students are dead from a single-vehicle crash in southeastern Fond du Lac County.

Their car crashed into a tree near the railroad tracks on Lost Arrow Road near Highway 175 -- that's in the Town of Fond du Lac. Authorities say all three -- two 16-year-olds and an 18-year-old -- were killed instantly.

Investigators spent the day at the scene reconstructing the crash. They believe around 11:30 the boys' Honda Civic was going west on Lost Arrow Road at "very excessive" speed. They hit the railroad tracks and became airborne. The driver overcorrected when the car landed, sliding sideways.

The car slid into a culvert and then hit the tree with enough force to uproot the tree. The 18-year-old driver was ejected from the car; the two passengers were wearing seat belts.

The exact speed is still being determined. Investigators says alcohol or drugs were not factors.

One driver watched the entire crash unfold and called 911. "There was a witness coming from the opposite direction that saw the vehicle traveling towards him at a very high rate of speed, and actually saw the vehicle airborne when it hit the tracks, and then he slowed down, stayed back, and he didn't know what was going to happen," Captain Dean Will of the sheriff's department said.

Police recovered IDs and backpacks, and are in the process of notifying the victims' families. The victims' names aren't being made public at this time.

Investigators say they have no idea why the students were on the road or where they planned to go.

Captain Will said, "In the 26 years that I've been doing this, this is probably one of the worst impacts and one of the worst accidents I've gone to, especially when you have three young kids. It's just senseless."

having a son of my own, i can totally relate to how my parents must have felt when I left the house in my car at 16. Or even worse yet, getting into a buddies car to go kick it.

I'm dreading the day I have to go through that with my little guy.

Something jsut like that happend .5 mile from my house sunday morning about 2am... some 18 yr old kids in a 99 escort looks like they tried airing it over some rail road tracks with a stop sign... got side ways and slid into a tree that was about 3 foot around... I guess it looked about as bad as this one... If it wasnt for the tree they would have went into the house 10 foot behind the tree.

"TOWN OF HARTFORD - A one-car accident Sunday that took the lives of two Hartford teens remains under investigation.
Joseph A. Safranski, 18, and Austin J. Kowalski, 17, died after their 1999 Ford Escort went into a skid and struck a tree at 2:26 a.m. on Kettle Moraine Road north of Highway 60, according to a Washington County Sheriff’s Department report.

Safranski was a senior at Hartford Union High School; Kowalski was a former student.

"We have counselors available throughout the day for students and staff who need additional emotional support," said Dan Dobner, associate principal and director of community relations.

The district has also been offered support by counselors from other area schools."

It's a shame that it takes accidents and deaths like these to get kids to understand that speeding excessively doesn't lead to a lot of good. But it seems they never learn.

No there is constantly assholes in imports and the occasional V8 car doing 120+ mph on this very road behind my house, its really long and straight for a good 1.5 mile, but narrow.

I was woken up about 2 weeks ago to a V8 car going 130+ going by the house, i thought i was gonna get sucked out the window by the vacuum this this thing sounded like it created... the sounds was scary as hell.

It is & it seems like they learn 'for a while' if it happens to someone they know and are personally affected. But theres the attitude of invincibility & "it cant won't happen to me." Unfortutately it'll continue to happen.

Which road? When I went to Hartford, I did some really stupid driving getting back to Hubertus. I was very lucky on many accounts.

Thats sad, the same thing happend sunday morning out by me. a girl i went to school with was with a friend and went around a corner between 80-100MPH (in a 35) in a early 90's benz, lost control of the car then over corrected into a tree. the girl who was the passenger died at the scene and i believe the male driver died later on at the hospitol.

really makes you wake up and live life a little more fully after hearing this.

a kid from our school died like this he was speeding and jumped a rail road crossing sliding sideways and crashing into a ditch. It is very sad to see someone so young loose their life to reckless driving.

It's too bad something like that had to happen to two young guys, but we were all the same way back in the day, I know I was. Granted I never tried to hit the tracks at 130, I still tried. We all thought we were invincible, but something tragic like this has to occur to snap us back to reality....

thing is, where they did this, they would have gone up a steep hill, ran the stop sign caught some air, lost control way up there, only to plow thru another stop sign and off the road into the tree.

I went would take certain "airplane hills" back in Iowa a bit over the recommended limit and catch some air but you know what, I was in a 1977 Dodge Monaco, and I sure as shit didn't do it around trees.

I'm amazed I survived my teens considering some of the dumb sh** stunts I pulled back then.

If I remember, there was a set of RR tracks on Sherman Rd. just west of Wauwatosa Rd. out in Cedarburg where you could catch some serious air if your going 50 or more over them. (what stop sign?) I tore up 2 beaters flying over those things (a '73 Torino - bent the front steering up & lost the front bumper & a '70 Demon - about bent that sucker in half doors wouldn't open no more) Foolish? YUP! That's what happens when you hit those tracks at 80 or so.

We also used to speed down Green Bay road at about 3:00am (Between Thiensville & Cedarburg) with the headlights off just to see who could do it the fastest. Did the same on Hogsback Rd. in Holy Hill. Darwin didn't claim us then either. :wooo

We also used to drag race on Baehr Rd Between County Line Rd and Donges Bay Rd. (That was before anything was around there. (only 2 farm houses at the time) And the old "Turn Here" game which was pretty much anywhere in Ozaukee County. Flying down country roads and who ever is riding shotgun would call "turn here" just to see if you can make it. Waaayyy Stupid on all counts looking back at it.

I think I am more afraid for my Daughter now getting in the car with someone else driving like a lunatic looking back at my own stunts as a teen. I think that is one of those talks I will have to have with her pretty soon.

Screw that, I've tried that various times, and it's like one-one-thousanddddd... hell no!
My luck a free range Elk would run out in the road.

We had a couple kids there senior year around here just in town that were trying to jump a hill at i want to say about 80-90 mph. They were in a trans am so getting to that speed in the amount of time needed was no problem. but when they landed it got squirly fishtailed it off the road sideways and tips the car sideways and slammed the roof against a tree. I believe they were both killed instantly. It was very sad considering i used to sit next to one of them in my electricity class. It was also very unfortunate that if the car had been a foot to the right they would have missed everything and just shot out in to the feild behind the tree.
