From what I read somewhere...

1) The US raids an Iranian liaison office in Arbil, in which five of the office's employees were taken captive, actually intended to apprehend two officials of much higher rank - Muhammad Jafari, deputy head of the Iranian National Security Council, and General Minojahar Frouzanda, head of Iranian Revolutionary Guard intelligence.

2) Iran takes the British sailors hostage as a bargaining chip to free the 5 Iranians in US "custody" and to keep a US missile strike at bay.

3) The Russians recently pulled out their technicians and clearly the US would warn certain countries of the upcoming attack. Many countries are making preparations to get their Embassy staff out of Iran.

4) Blair saying "the next two days are critical" to get the sailors free...
