So there is a good chance I may have found my new truck and may be picking it up tomarrow.

(NEW) 2006 Silverado 1500 4x4 Vortec MAX
Crew Cab
6.0 Engine

I need input here! What do you guys think? I was a little irritated that the frame had rust on it and what the hell is there frame coating made out of? It scratches off like tar!

Anyways, Let me know people, I want oppinions and some info on the aftermarket for this truck.

The only things I can find that I dont like about it so far is that:
1. It sits low
2. The frame coating sucks
3. THe frame is not fully boxed like my dodge.

solutions to your three problems

1. lift it
2. recoat the frame
3. deal with it, semis don't even have boxed frames :D

just buy it, they are nice trucks.

aftermarket is Huge. You have the entire LSx Family to work off of.

Dodge frames are junk, buy a Ford. Ford has the strongest, most heavy duty frame out there in the 1/2 Ton Family...

The Ford frame is fully boxed, larger, and uses a thicker metal than both Dodge and Chevy.

The F150 will also sit higher than the Silverado.

boxed in frames can munch on my rug.

think about this:
what happens when you attatch a heavy trailer behind the truck? it provides lots of extra drag and resistance. what happens when you hit the go pedal with the torque trying to move the truck? frame flex. boxed in frames are nice, but provide TOO much rigidity (if thats a word, if not **** you). The frames still need to flex a lil bit. If they can't, there is the potential to crack. Semi frames arent even boxed in, why? They need to flex. Granted semis are on a whole different class of power....etc, the concept is still the same, just on a smaller level. Besides, in the 70's and 80's no one had boxed in frames and somehow those trucks lasted hundreds of thousands of miles with proper maintenance, so why would we need them now?

Hey Joe, Ford sucks.

If you are going weld angle iron along the frame and fill the rails with concrete anyway, why in the hell would you waste time on a 1500?
The 6.0 is a nice motor and has a load of grunt, and the aftermarket is huge, as was mentioned.
Talk to people who own the trucks you are looking at and who use them the way you would.
Tossing around buzzwords like 'fully boxed frame' and 'synthetic blinker fluid' just shows that you pay attention to commercials.
Personally, I like my Rice Hauler, and I have no idea if the frame is fully boxed, partially boxed, bubble-wrapped, or just strapped to a pallet.
I drove everything in the half-ton market before making my decision, and I have no regrets after 2 years.
I towed 8600 lbs of boat and trailer to AZ last fall, and the truck didn't miss a beat.

Most 70s and 80s trucks didn't have A/C either... :rolf

Or Crew Cabs...

So why do we need 'em now?? :durr

You have a Tundra right? If I remember right, that's not a fully foxed frame...

I really liked everything about the 06 Sliverado I had. Had I not used up all the warranty in just a shade over 12 months, I'd stil have that truck for sure. I refuse to have a newer truck that doesn't have a powertrain warranty.

one reason why the frames rust on the chevys is because unlike ford, who uses a coating system similar to powdercoating, chevy still uses a wax coating. just get the thing undercoated. find a dealer that does it and don't pay over 60 bucks for the whole undercarriage to be done. if you pay anything over that you are paying too much, even at $60 the dealer will still be making a few bucks.

joe, my 85 suburban had air conditioning from the factory. it didnt work by the time i got it but it was still there :D

And most 3500 trucks from the 80's, at least from chevy, were crew cabs. my 1984 3500 chevy was a crew cab dually. The 80's are when trucks finally started getting a/c, crew cabs, dual rear wheels, and shit like that

Slow Joe
03-27-2007, 11:18 AM
Yeah, I thought about that after I said it... My dad's '85 Dually was a "3+3"... and had A/C

3 passengers in the front, 3 passengers in the back... Full 4 Doors. But in the 1/2 Ton Range the full 4 door is a newer thing.

But 70s trucks I was right on... :rolf

yea joe, 70's were pretty much regular cabs across the board. 80's everything was a regular cab unless it was a 3500, and with fords, they didnt have extended cabs till later in the 80's. Chevy came around with extended cabs in the late 80's as well, like 88 or newer.

cuz your single still sucks and is inefficient.

1 3/4" long tubes, to a true dual 2.5" w/ an h-pipe for the win.

Probably a few other things. That engine package comes with some active ride control system, a auto 4wd option, auxillery oil cooler and a different transmission.

SPEAKING of transmissions, I think it may have to go to the dealer with less then 200 miles on it. When im coasting at low speeds and then hit the gas I get a clunking sound. You ever have this problem? Dodge is supposed to be the ones with Trans problems and after 34K of well maintained but severly abused miles, it has yet to have a engine or trans issue....OH....and its got more balls then the 6.0 to.......regardless of what they claim the horsepower at, my seat of the pants engine dyno tells me that my hemi would walk this thing.

then take your chevy back. I've driven all of the chevy v8 offerings, as well as the Dodge. They are fairly even, but in a 6.0 v.s. hemi, I'll take the 6.0. if it's 5.3 v.s. hemi, I'll take the Hemi.

dont worry about the trans issue. when accelerating slowly in mine, my 1-2 shift is pretty harsh. Its normal. The computer just likes to ramp the pressure up when there is no load. The trans in that truck 4L65E is one of the best, and even if you have the 4L85E, that too is a kickass trans. No need to worry about it. Mine has been doing it since day one, and right now im at 22k miles and it hasn't gotten any worse. Talk to tom (bad ls1) and he can give you a tune and fix that problem.

I too have the auto 4x4 option (yeah its push button shift on the fly yo)

As far as seat of the pants, your truck is drive by wire throttle. Remove that and seat of the pants will be drastically increased. How do you fix that? Talk to tom. :D

I isolated the clunking sound, it only does it when decelerating. If im slowing down between 10-15mph then get on the gas again it makes a loud clunk. This does not sound good to me. As far at the drive by wire.......um....my dodge has that to...so I dont believe that is the problem. I like the drive by wire personally.

why waste money on a cold air kit? stock intake tube isnt that bad. get a drop in high flow filter, and cut the fender snorkel tube off of your air box. thats what I did to mine, works fine.

my exhaust was custom made, phuck buying a kit for hundreds of dollars. I think straight pipes sound best on these chevys because of the massive sized cats they have.

talk to tom (badls1) for a tune. Its $100 bucks and will accomplish just as much as any box tuner can do, and tom's tunes do way more. He can tune it as mild or as wild as you want.

#1. Regardless of what you think, your stock airbox does not flow as well as a forced air kit

#2. This is just my oppinion, but your truck sounds like sh!t, the corsa kit is pricy but it has a very nice tuned sound to it and has proven power gains, your straightpipes are probably doing nothing but making noise. Not to mention that my exhaust is ran totally different then yours.

#3. As far as the famous "tommy tune" I do not doubt that his tuning kicks ass, but I would like the ability to reset to stock incase of the need for warranty work.

Dont get pissed at my comments, im just stating things the way I see them.

#1.5 for the price of a "cold air kit" and the 5hp or less you gain, the CAI can suck it
#2 my truck is loud, it rumbles, thats all i want. i like the way it sounds, and thats all i care about. if you dont like it, suck my ass or dont listen to it. make yours louder so you dont have to hear my trash. what does yours being routed totally different have to do with the price of eggs? its ran down the passenger side of the truck, up and over the axel, and exits at an angle on the right rear corner of the truck

#3 you can go back to your stock tune at any time. besides, it doesnt matter what kind of tuner you go with, whether its a tom tune or a chip, dealerships can tell when the computer has been modified, the date of the computer flash is stored so they can check that.

Getting a little defensive? I dont want just noise, i want performance.... If you like the way your truck sounds, thats what matters, not what I think Noise isnt everything to me, if i could have it as quiet as it is now but with substantial power gains I would.

im not gettin defensive, im giving reponses to the facts and opinions presented to me as i see fit :D

the thing is, I cant justify spending that much money on shit that will make very minute differences. and my shit ass exhaust actually did make a significance to my truck. I had tom analyze a datalog session a few friends and I did with his tuning software and we discovered my fuel trims and a/f ratio is way off, meaning the truck is flowing way more air now, and the computer is trying to compensate by dumping in too much fuel.

the K&N cold air kit I wanted is like 300 bucks, even on ebay. and for what kind of gain? people I talked to said the stock intake is just fine, just get a drop in. Besides, from what I have read, the flat drop in aftermarket filters flow better then any cone filter you will find. I mean its not a race car, how much power gains do you need to make out of it? do you just want the vehicle to be proportionate in the way it "pulls" with the actual power being generated?

I think the real solution is to get a tom tune. Have him cut down on the torque management, remove the drive by wire shit, bump timing up a lil, play with the a/f ratios, shift points, line pressure, whatever you want. you will notice a night and day difference (from what im told) but it makes sense. these silverados are wired up like a christmas tree. So go ahead and pick out whatever you want for an exhaust, get a CAI if you must, and get a tune, you will love it (and i gaurantee the biggest gain of them all will be from tom, and for the money, you cant beat it)

Yeah I know that, but what fun would this site be without the drama?!

i would love to get better than 15 on the highway. As long as I dont have to have the loud annoying exhaust that I would have to listen to all day.

I bought a MAC cold air kit for 198 bucks(2005 2500 6.0). Same as a k&n but not over priced.

Thanks Mike

From MAC peformance in Temecula? I can get it ALOT cheaper, im very good friends with Bobby Mac, the owners son. Ive had there CAI's before, was never of a fan of them though, they fit poorly. There exhaust on the other hand is wicked, i only wish they made a kit for my truck!

Just curious, if you're after performance why not just buy the right car? :confused

I understand some trucks can be fast but originally they were built for hauling, towing, ect. not racing. (unless it's the craftsman truck series  )

they are used for towing but more power easier to stay at speed, better gas mileage. So what I am trying to say I need better gas mileage out of my 05 2500 6.0. I would buy a diesel but would not start to make money until around 185,000. I don't tow much to need one right now. Unless I just race more.....

Because there is nothing wrong with having a pickup that performs well. And as stated before, the power you have, the easier it becomes to maintain speed with a load. Thinking just a tun, cai and full exhaust for right now, what its out of warranty if we still have it Ill pull the heads and cam. It needs a tune bad though, its sluggish.

cai, tom tune and headers would be a fantastic start.

yeah, its in the works, probably gonna go with JBA exhaust do to limited availability, JBA and Corsa are the only ones that make it for the truck. As far as headers, not sure where im going yet, JBA is a tad expensive from what ive seen but someone from the board is getting me a price. I still need to talk to tom about a tune and narrowing down wich cai i want......
